Easily MOM today..

Didn't put a foot wrong and had Werner in his back pocket most of the game..

Not a bad 4th choice CB to have...

Keeps that up he will become 2nd choice and an able deputy for Big Virg himself..

Yeah Mane was MOM. And Fabs wasn't that bad either. Chelsea clearly targeted him.

I'd say they were planning on targeting that side of the centre backs regardless of who played there

Seems like the decision to opt for Fab as 4th choice (while keeping Gini and signing Thiago) rather than sign backup centre back might not be as bad as most of us feared. That said, we do need to consider long term options. Matip and Gomez are missing too many games...

I don't remember Virgil doing anything today apart from chesting it down trying to setup a volley in their box.

Fabinho on the other hand was very noticeable and it's clear he has fantastic defensive instincts and abilities that are translating well to centre back. Motm for me, didn't put a foot wrong.

He was brilliant.

Couldn't have had a tougher test than Werner and he just pocketed him.

His interpretation of the CB position was very different from Gomez – he knew he couldn't afford to let Werner turn and run at him or past him, so he had to get tight and tackle early (Gomez's pace would have given him an option of picking his battles and surprising the attacker with a forceful tackle and at other times standing off and just shepherding him towards a corner). This didn't look too safe, to be honest – Virgil didn't seem to be anywhere near and any mistake would have let Werner 1 on 1. There were a couple of fairly dangerous moments, like the time when a kind bounce off Fabinho allowed Werner to have a strike at goal, but fortunately he missed.

All that said, I don't think Fabinho could have done any more than he did and unlike Lovren, who interprets the position in a similar way, he was never close to self-destructing. I would still prefer to have a proper 4th CB in the team, but he would have to be really good to be a better option than Fabs. BTW Klopp just said Matip will be out for "a few weeks, maybe couple of weeks." Really unfortunate that he's so injury-prone, but we have to plan ahead with this in mind.

There were a few times when his positioning on the pitch was that of a DM rather than a centre half. That said, I thought he had a great game and read the dangers really well. It is probably best that he is the forth choice centre half but at the same time he is probably better than most of the forth choice centre halves that can be brought in.

Or indeed most other teams' regular CBs !

My concern is not so much whether or not he can do a job at CB, but more the fact that he's then not doing his job at DM...

Fabinho was excellent, if we can get that sort of performance from him it's worth dropping him into defense on a more permanent basis as we have more than enough quality in midfield anyway. He's played there before though and looked all over the place, so give it a few games, but yesterday was really promising. As said, Gomez and Matip miss too many games, we need to buy really in the longer term.

In game where teams will park the bus it is now a viable strategy from the start, or one we evolve into i.e. Gomez off and put another attacker on with Fabs moving back.

Bar the shoot out, how many has he faced? I think it's too early to call it a weakness.

Three

I know that because I was confused by tweets that had "(three faced)" in there ... I thought it was some reference to him being even worse than two-faced. I was about to post a question about it on here, and realised just in time

So 1 in 3 saved is not a bad record

It's not though...

If you include penalty shoot outs..

He lost the one against City too last season

We may have other options in midfield, but do we have another Fabinho equivalent for games in which we need a rock at DM taking care of business? I don't reckon we do, so I'd still sooner we fetched in a replacement for Lovren as 4th choice CB, excellent as Fabs was yesterday.

Henderson had his best period for us when he filled in for Fabinho last year. Not that I disagree, we could do with a proper CB because Matip and Gomez are so unreliable

I can understand if we don't get one. It's a gamble, but a calculated one. I think we would miss Fabs at holding against a really against a top-class side like City, or teams like Palace and Wolves who are fast and strong on the counter. But for most teams, I would be more than comfortable with Henderson or Thiago there. Thiago's defensive game is really impressive. Koumeito also just has a sense of class about him.
