Heh, well I'm with you on that. I wouldn't mind a couple Agueros or Lennons either.
Great examples actually Ken. Aguero and Lennon transfered at the age of 20 and 17 respectively for a combined total of £16m during the year in which we signed Crouch, Sissoko, Bellamy, Morientes, Palletta, Pennant and Kuyt for a total of about 48m.
I feel mugged off Ken I really do.

Scot Carson is an example of us buying a player from a lower league club. He didn't turn out too well in the end. Lennon was the best bit of business of all the players mentioned. 1million, he'd fetch 20 times that now.

How about:

Pacheco
Buchtmann
Nemeth

Ince
Ecclescake
Amoo

Let's not write them off yet.

I actually think Wash is pretty decent if provided decent support.
You could add Saric, Poloskei and Dalle Valle to that list as well.

Agree bout Wash too.

Don't forget we were also in for Aguerro but AM was a better fit and they were willing to take a bigger risk than we were. It worked out but we WERE in for him too.

It seems to me that we try to pick up quite a lot of the excellent, young, potential future stars (whether it works out or not Lucas should also be included in that bunch) but aren't willing to go over the top on a fee for an unproven talent regardless of the 'potential'. Can't blame us for that .... because otherwise we'd be slagging the club off for splashing 10 - 15M on a virtually unknown and unproven youngster.

CRYSTAL PALACE whizzkid Victor Moses wants to talk to Eagles legends Ian Wright and Mark Bright before making his Premier League move.

The 19-year-old is expected to leave Selhurst Park next month, with Palace desperate to cash in on the forward to ease their crippling debts.

Starsport understands Liverpool have held preliminary talks with Palace, leaving them in pole position to sign him.

Tottenham, Arsenal, Sunderland and Wigan are also keeping tabs on £5m-rated Moses and will step up their interest in the England Under-19 star once the transfer window opens on Friday.

Cole and Lampard fall into the Defoe category as they were hardly plucked out of obscurity at the age of 17. And what's more, they were building at the time, as City are now.

United have done well out of their youth setup in recent years but the reward has largely been financial. Thus far the players Ferguson has earmarked as replacements for the old guard have all been rather expensive imports. It's also worth noting that Ferguson's most successful punt came from Portugal.
I agree to a degree, and (childish alert) I don't fucking care. I want to sign some up and coming British players. I'm sick of up and coming foreign shite.

That said i'd take some up and coming foreign players that aren't dogmuck. If we can't get Moses, Delphs, lennons etc then maybe we could get some kerlons, patos, higauins, kerrisons etc
There's no denying we've missed opportunities in the past, particularly under Houllier, pumping money on foreign youngsters. But I'd wager if we were to fork out £6m-£10m NOW on a young English player from the lower leagues, most on here would be fucking livid. It's about timing and finances, and that hasn't always been a luxury we've been able to afford. Like the ever illusive last piece of the jigsaw, that's always been an issue when money has been available, first and foremost people want to see improvement on the first team.

Arsenal have always had that policy (for young playes), and ultimately they've won nothing in recent years. I know they're having a good season so far, and generally look a good, young footballing side, but anyway. That's just their policy. Spurs have always had the money to do the same, without really being equipped to nurture such talent to it's full potential. We've been in a situation of late where it's been imperative to pay £20m for more established players that would improve the first team here and now.

The only criticism we can make is that instead of spending £9m on Babel, £7m on Dossena etc we could perhaps have taken equal risk on one of these lads. Regards Milner, I'd have him, he's versatile and a steady Eddie, but it's taken a few years for him to settle and find consistency. Right now though, I wish we'd kept Danny Murphy, Crouch and Bellamy, but situation and the players needs themselves came into play. Hindsight and all that.

I'm sure mark bright will give liverpool a glowing reference
Ha, yeah I was thinking that aswell. If we're going to have any kind of chance of getting him, don't talk to Bright..

Ok so when was the last time we heard of a young up and coming British player that came to Liverpool?
Delph? No Young? No Milner? No Lennon? No.
I know I go on about this from time to time but it fucking really pisses me off. Yes you pay a bit more but here's the rub, all of those players (Bale excluded) look like being top class premiership players in years to come ALL bought from lower league clubs in the time that we have signed Palleta, Leto, Babel, Gonzales, N'gog, Lucas and probably 10 other duffer eurokids all worth two bits of fuck all because they are mostly fucking shite.
Honest to god it makes me feel sick looking at some of the fucking bilge we've spent fortunes on (20m on babel, Leto and Lucas ffs that'd be Ramsay and Young in our side)
So Moses won't sign for us because we don't sign young quality English league players.
N'gog is as good as any of those non-liverpool players you mentioned particularly when they were at the same age as he is now.

We don't have the resources to be competing for the star players any more, and only if it's the pad the squad out a bit, I can't say I'd be against investing in young talent. I started a thread sometime ago about why would any young player choose Liverpool ahead of other clubs, and there wasn't any particular reason we could think of.

Now that's changed, our squad is thread bare and youngsters are getting more of a look in.
