Roy Hodgson has dismissed claims by Spurs new boy Rafael van der Vaart that he was a Liverpool transfer target.
Earlier this week the Holland international claimed that he snubbed a deadline day switch to Anfield in favour of a move to North London, bringing his two-year stay at Real Madrid to an end.
Van der Vaart, 27, joined Harry Redknapp's side for £8million after reported preliminary talks with Reds chiefs in April failed to materialise and Hodgson, speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Birmingham City, has laughed off the suggestions that he was in for the World Cup finalist.
He said: "No, that's not true. Those stories can get very irritating.
"An agent rings you up to ask if you want to sign van der Vaart, you say 'No' and then the next minute you're one of the clubs that want to sign him.
"I apologise to van der Vaart if his agent gave him another story. I think he's a very good player, but he's not the profile of the player we were looking for.
"When it came up I said, 'No, we have players in his position.'"
