What a game by Coates.

Precise tackles, didn't get bullied by anyone, strong in the air, good distribution and great positioning.
He was constantly in the mix, I don't think anyone got passed him today.

Encouraging performance, long may it continue.

Dare I say that we've found our new Hyypia?

Looks lovely on the ball, but that was a ridiculously stupid tackle on Luiz - which if it had have been the other way around we'd have been screaming for a penalty all day long.

Yep. Like with his fuck up though against Stoke, it was good to see him (in typical South American attitude) not let his head drop and give a rousing performance. He's rusty and will need perseverance, but he's got the raw attributes it seems.

Watching him play before he came (Copa), all the signs were there; Glad it is translating to the English game. Positioning and playing it out from the back were his strengths along with aerial ability.

The new Sami? In his (and our) dreams.

You never know Sheik, he's still very young.
I'm not knocking the lad and hope he does turn out to be as good but it's a bit premature to laud him as a potential Liverpool great based on a Jeremy Beadle hand sized amount of games for us.

That was a definite penalty.
You haven't seen it, have you Hal?
Coates pulls his leg back and sideshow bob moves his right foot towards it to make it look like a foul.

I am not saying they haven't been given before but it wasn't a penalty.

I was pretty much with you till your last line Modo. I even had Coates in my top 3 in MOM thread.

He's nowhere near a new Sami. Not close.

Of course not and it's stupid to even make such claims at this point.

However, we must remember Sami was 26(?) when he joined us and had just led his team to a Champions League place. He was a ready made player back then and also had no problems adapting to English game or to life in England in general.
Coates has just turned 21 and although he's already a full international he's still very very raw. He also comes from another continent and from a totally different culture so it's likely to take a bit of time to adapt on and off the pitch. It's extremely hard to judge how good he'll become but he has all the tools to make a world class CB. But again, comparisons with Hyypiä are just silly and also unfair on the player himself.

p.s. I hated that goal celebration, cringeworthy. Just stick to running and shouting, please!

Well no one will be able to fill Hyypia's boots but this kid can make his own mark.

It was a pen mate. You'd be screaming for it the other way round. Luis made the most of but it was a pen.
Nope, if it was on our side I would be pleased that we conned the ref.
Luis almost kicks Coates's leg, such is his desperation to make contact with it.
Sure we have seen them given all the time but that doesn't make it a foul.
Sideshow Bob was in no way impeded by Coates outstretched leg bar his own intentional contact.

i've stuck anyone who didn't think it was a pen on ignore. that kind of ridiculous bias isn't worth debating with ever.

but I think Coates looks good. I just wish they'd pronounce his name properly. rhymes with boats.

I can see what you're saying, Count, but I think it's a definite pen. Piedro summed up what I wanted to say really.

My initial reaction was pen, having seen a few replays I still think it's a pen.

That said, we should have had another two penalties in the game, so they can't complain really.

That Luiz character is a fucking liability. I can't believe some of the things he does as a centreback.

I would not be too dismissive of the Sammi comparisons. He is 20 and in not a lot of games has shown glimpses of fantastic potential, to a level perhaps even better than the great man. Who knows what Hyppia might have achieved if he had joined at such a tender age?

Complete overstatement that. If we played him a lot he'd preform to standard. He's one of those if you're good enough you're old enough types.

I haven't seen too much of him, but what I have seen he does seem to make a few mistakes per game and is prone to rash tackles in dangerous areas.

It's doing him no favours saying he can be better than Hyypia yet - the best centreback I've seen in my lifetime. Let's give him a while before we proclaim him the best thing since slice bread. People were proclaiming Skrtel as our saviour when he first joined. It's only now, 4 years later, that he's starting to add some consistency to his performances.

Let's not build him up to beat him down, just yet.

Okay, I just want to totally clear things up.
Suarez is a diving cheating cunt for going down at a slight touch and because sideshow bob moved hid leg to make contact with Coates, it is a stonewall penalty.
Right?

When i saw it first time i thought nailed on pen, but when you watch it again Luiz deffo lowers his leg to make contact and then performs an outrageous dive.

It was a penalty in my books, but I think because Luiz (or Luif according to the commentator) made such a ridiculous dive so emphasize it, he gave the dive.

It's strange, I'm one of Coates biggest fans, but I only thought he did alright. He seems to clumsy for my liking at the moment and got spun by Torres a few times. I know he'll get better with time, but I think people are getting a little too excited. I do hope he plays in the FA cup like he has been in the Carling Cup too, he needs games to keep showing his worth.
