If any of you missed it I just saw the announcement on ESPN which was delayed. They had Ronlaldo Messi and Iniesta on the stage waiting for the result. I thought Messi deserved it for the insane year he had last year but figured they would think Ronaldo was due for Madrids La Liga win.

Anyway it went to Iniesta, Messi looked genuinely delighted and Ronaldo looked like a dog who ate a wasp. Brilliant TV

there's probably a better picture somewhere

Messi has not moved an inch or changed his expression between those two photos ... its not him its a cardboard cut out!

Ive just seen the rerun, it was made even better by the tv hosts fawning all over Ronaldo, paying tribute to Messi and then largely ignoring Iniesta. It was like they told everybody Ronaldo was the winner, and then counted the votes

Really though?
If last season was Ronaldo and Messi's debut season in Europe Iniesta wouldn't have had a hope in hell.
Are we getting too used to them being worlds apart from any other player in the world?
Ronaldo scored 60 goals for his club and one the league.
Messi scored 73 goals for his club (23 assists as well!).

How could anyone justify Iniesta getting the award?

Spain winning the Euros with Iniesta getting the player of the tournament award probably helped his cause

Because it's high time such awards reflected the fact that goals and goalscorers depend on the efforts of the rest of the team as well as the scorers themselves. And because it's priceless to see Ronaldo's nose ourt of joint.

I agree with your last sentence, obviously, but again, I think it's a case of people getting too used to their goal scoring/assist prowess.
How many players in the history of football have scored consistently the way they have? In any team? With the best team of their era around them?
Maybe Pele? Haven't a clue, but certainly not in my lifetime have I seen a player score over 50 goals two seasons running, in europe.
Messi's already on 6 goals for his club this season.
The emphasis to my argument here is on goals, simply because no other player could possibly emulate it. And I doubt Iniesta will be classed in the all time top 5 players by the time he retires. Ronaldo probably will. Messi certainly will be. Maybe above them all.
Those two players have had their best respective seasons in terms of personal stats and accomplishments, so I still find the decision crazy.

Yeah but not every goal was him dribbling to the goal

Iniesta is just as integral to Barca AND the current Europe and world champions
