Tyson

Doc's post in the Haye Chisora thread reminded me that, last Friday when bladdered, I was watching some Tyson clips with my bro-in-law.
Now, I'm not normally an advocate of modern (ish) sports personas being labelled the best ever.
But, Tyson was the business.
I don't care whatever anyone says about Louis, Marciano, Ali, Frasier, Foreman etc. Iron Mike would have killed them.
I used to love boxing as me and me Dad followed it religiously when it was normal fayre on the telly.
Was he the best ever?
What was his best fight?

Tyson was frightening at his peak, but IMO he hasn't even been the best in my time (basically Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali onwards), let alone all time. Ali would have beaten him (far more of Ali's success was due to an ability to absorb punishment than most of us realised at the time), and the way Foreman hammered Frazier - an incredibly tough man - to defeat suggests he would have done as well. Frazier himself might have done, but I suspect his style would have suited Tyson.

Tyson beat the biggest array of chumps ever.

Lennox Lewis was better for fucks sake.

Tyson in his prime was the best of the lot imo. I reckon he would have beaten Lewis in his prime. However here's nine and a half minutes of lewis proving he did indeed have an iron chin. Great watch

Tyson later said that the reason why he went in so aggressively was because he wanted to finish the other fighter off as quickly as possible. He said that he had a problem breathing through his nose and would tire quite easily and he knew if the fight when on then he would stand a chance of getting beat.

Its extremely difficult to compare boxers from different eras, but I have to agree with LH. When Tyson burst onto the scene as a 17 year old, there was a period there where I don't think any boxer of any era could have lived with him.

Fuck off Ry. Lewis would have been decked in a round by the Tyson that existed circa 85-88.
Didn't Tyson pay Lennox Lewis a million pounds to step aside from a scheduled match with him when Tyson was at his peak?

There didn't seem to be a great deal of quality at the heavy weight level. He fought Larry Holmes but he would of been pretty old by then.
Look at the welterweight/light weight areas.

Gatti
Corrales
Castillo
De La Hoya
Mayweather Jr
Judah
Marquez
Morales
Barrera
Mosely
Cotto

I'm sure there's more, heaps of quality in there.

Castillo vs Corrales 1 was an amazing fight.

Tyson looked like the scariest Boxer I've ever seen when he burst onto the scene. I do think cannier and better boxers from the golden era of heavyweight boxing like Ali would have found ways to deal with him. I mean Bonecrusher Smith took Tyson the distance in his pomp. He lost on points, but if he could manage it, you'd have to fancy the likes of Ali would do a lot better. It would be amazing to put fighters from different eras together.

Tyson after his jail term was old and fat...

The fight with him and Lewis was very lopsided...it should have never lasted as long as it did.
