TV time wasting

The officials need to make a statement on this. There is now way that tv companies or anyone else should be allowed to influence how long a game goes on for and if there has been coercion then someone should be held responsible.
As usual though the referees will avoid commenting on it and hope it all goes away which it probably will. Can you imagine the fuss Mourinho would have made if this had happened to him?

BT Sport themselves told us the stoppage for the penalty VAR review was 3 minutes. There were two other VAR stoppages, two substitutions by West Brom and various "normal" stoppages. So clearly 4 minutes was way too little.

Though we should count that as a blessing, as extra minutes could have meant us going in 4-1 or 5-1 down

BTW - the Echo website is an absolute abortion* - it always freezes my browser while it tries to load unwanted videos & countless adverts, and once it does unfreeze, scrolling down the story just restarts the whole process

* topical reference in Ireland today

You're right the Echo website is a shambles, half the time i get frustrated with it and click off it as it's doing my head in.

I've a pain in me hole with the abortion talk

Talk Sport timed the VAR stoppages at I think 7 minutes, then 3 goals and 2 subs. I was under the impression subs were 30 seconds each but not sure where that idea came from.

If we're going down this video route, we need a big american style clock with 45 mins on it that pauses with every stoppage and resets at half time.

Yes the Echo is atrocious. You get that 'video loading' sign and then to add insult to injury the 'video' is often just YouTube-style muzak accompanied by still pictures of games!

As for VAR, the Faustian deal with TV was made years ago. When the clubs take that much money they can't think they still call the shots. If there was a problem on BT Sport, whose schedules can really be stretched as much as they like, imagine what it will be like if a live game gets on ITV, who'll not tolerate it over-running its slot.

It amazes me that the TV coverage doesn't get slammed more generally. The worst thing these days is the obsession with multiple replays of everything from goals to the naffest mis-hit. On Saturday they almost missed West Brom's first goal because they were still showing replays of ours. The game these days is just too fast for that kind of leisurely re-appraisal of what happened a minute ago. You used to be able to get a reasonable sense of tactics, formations etc from watching on TV, now there are so many cuts and pointless replays it's about as illuminating as watching a dance from the waist up.

I hate the current TV obsession with showing us what the bench is doing or how the crowd is looking when the fucking ball is in play. Who gives a flying fuck if the manager is looking sad or angry or having some chewing gum , what's happening with the ball is all i care about.

Or show some slow mo replay of some cunt chance or a player falling over, when the ball is in play. We want to see the match live you muppets.

Teams like Swansea, Everton and WBA rely on refereeing incompetence when it comes to time added on periods (obv when they're winning a game). The smaller teams would never allow it to happen. Sam Allardyce whole strategy is about nicking a goal, and then reducing a 90 minute game into 80 minutes.

I said in both match threads, that whilst I appreciate they have no obligation to take a throw in quickly, or a goal kick, a 90 minute game should be a 90 minute game (it's the rules!), irrespective of how many times Ben Foster re-spots a goal-kick.

We are so poor at the game management stuff that pundits and commentators go on about which is really time wasting, feigning injury and being a complete ballbag just to get the result. Oh and the fact that most of our players would rather try a backheel or a nutmeg when we're winning with 2 minutes to go than take it into the corner and be obstructive like everyone else doesn't help. It's like our players get lessons in how to be naive.
