Tribute to Hendo: 10 years

I'll admit I was one of those that doubted him, that thought he had reached the end of his time at the club several years ago. But he's proved his doubters wrong, emphatically. Sure he's not Gerrard, and he was never going to be, he's not a force of nature, a once in a generation talent who puts you on the edge of your seat with anticipation. His highlights reel isn't going to feature many world class goals or opponents left seated on the turf or trailing in his wake, but it will show a Liverpool captain lifting the CL and league trophies. Thats good enough for me. I hope he stays at the club til he retires moving into the Milner role of elder statesman in the squad.

I fucking love that broken 3rd chord on To Build A Home.

I'm also rather fond of our captain.

Wasn't his biggest fan in the beginning. Especially when he was a boring sideways passing DM, trying to be a Pirlo/Alonso.

But when he moved to the CM role, he grew in stature and his DRIVE and influence on side is now clear for all to see.

Now looks an excellent player and a world class captain.

P.s. we'd have won 2 titles, had Victor fucking Moses not under-played him a pass against City.

How good were the years when someone spotted that he would gambol around the time of every goal. Those clips were epic.

A bit poetic that the player Ferguson claimed had running issues as to the reason he didn’t go for him ends up being the player to lead us firmly back on our fucking perch. Big ears and the league!!

😀

Not as good a player, but a better captain than Stevie.

Not sure if that's an unpopular opinion or not.

One of the very few (maybe only) nice things about playing empty stadiums was getting to hear how vocal he was on the pitch
I don't begrudge Gerrard for the way he played... He was a once in a generation type player... Even years after his retirement has there been a box to box midfielder that you can honestly say is near to the ability that Gerrard displayed? I'll give you Kante for sure, Kimmich nah not for me, even though he's an excellent player...

Gerrard was a complete midfielder, could do anything and did. The only blemish which deluded haters try to use against his reputation is that he never won the league... Gerrard had to drag that team seemingly by himself, hence the nickname Atlas.

Henderson is a great player as well and twice was involved in our near title misses. If he hadn't missed those games in 2014 maybe his status would have been higher as we probably would have won the league in that season for sure.

He played that deeper role under instructions because we didn't have a better option, and did his best for the team's sake. Further forward is where he always wanted to play, and we can all see why now.

Jordan Henderson YNWA.

I don't think it's unpopular. I completely agree with you. Henderson is a MUCH better captain than Gerrard was.

Gerrard was impulsive, which was often a good thing but occasionally a bad thing too and I think that showed in his captaincy. He certainly knew how to get everyone in a huddle and give a rousing team talk, but on the pitch he was never that tactically restrained, so he was never really the right person to help us keep our shape, to tell players who should be marking who. It was fine, he was just a different kind of captain. Hendo is alot more measured and assured, but he also has the passion to have a bite at players too, even the ones he knows are superior players to him. That takes some balls.

Stevie G was an inspiration as a player and that was the whole nature of his leadership. Sorry but AFAIC he was actually not a good captain in other respects. In addition to not showing tactical nous (which is why I'm both impressed and surprised now that he's taken to management so well), he actually drove lesser players back inside their shell when he ranted at them, basically for not being an all-time great like he was and knew himself to be. Carra did far more of a skipper's job than Stevie did in those days. Hendo isn't at Stevie's level as a player, but as a leader of men on the field he's light years ahead of the best that Stevie was capable of.

Gerrard seemed a captain who dragged you over the finish line, and if you didn't make it to the line would be pissed off at everyone else because they weren't at his level. The flirting with Chelsea for 2 years straight seemed to give that impression.

Henderson couldn't give a shit about your level, he just wants you to play the best you can, and tried to motivate and support you to that.

For me, the Henderson style captain is infinitely better. I hate giving the captaincy to the best player because they're the best player and you're placating them.

The Captaincy shouldn't have been taken off hyypia when it was, it was just trying to keep Gerrard happy.

Was it though?

By contrast Sami was every inch (and there were plenty of them) a captain. It's a huge tribute to his total professionalism and his love for the club that he took the decision without a murmur and remained the top player and top pro he always had been.

I've got so much time for Henderson. I remember his first season where he was stuck on the right of midfield, playing within himself, and it looked like he was failing to adapt. So much so Rodgers was willing to boot him out for Dempsey, and naturally fans were already writing him off.

Following that we witnessed him blossom into a top-class CM and perfect role-model for all young lads growing up today. It's a lesson to anyone that if anyone regularly works hard and displays a faultless attitude they are usually worth persevering with. The only reliable metric to assess the influence of Jordans captaincy is the level of trophies won since he has taken the arm-band. Of course it's not a sole achievement, but he's been every bit as important as any of the coaching staff in setting the standards and representing the club faultlessly day in, day out, and it's that that dragged the whole club up another level.

Deserves to be remembered amongst the very best servants of this club.
