I don't begrudge Gerrard for the way he played... He was a once in a generation type player... Even years after his retirement has there been a box to box midfielder that you can honestly say is near to the ability that Gerrard displayed? I'll give you Kante for sure, Kimmich nah not for me, even though he's an excellent player...Not as good a player, but a better captain than Stevie.
Not sure if that's an unpopular opinion or not.
One of the very few (maybe only) nice things about playing empty stadiums was getting to hear how vocal he was on the pitch
Wasn't his biggest fan in the beginning. Especially when he was a boring sideways passing DM, trying to be a Pirlo/Alonso.
But when he moved to the CM role, he grew in stature and his DRIVE and influence on side is now clear for all to see.
Now looks an excellent player and a world class captain.
P.s. we'd have won 2 titles, had Victor fucking Moses not under-played him a pass against City.

I don't think it's unpopular. I completely agree with you. Henderson is a MUCH better captain than Gerrard was.
I love that man.
Gerrard was impulsive, which was often a good thing but occasionally a bad thing too and I think that showed in his captaincy. He certainly knew how to get everyone in a huddle and give a rousing team talk, but on the pitch he was never that tactically restrained, so he was never really the right person to help us keep our shape, to tell players who should be marking who. It was fine, he was just a different kind of captain. Hendo is alot more measured and assured, but he also has the passion to have a bite at players too, even the ones he knows are superior players to him. That takes some balls.
Was it though?Gerrard seemed a captain who dragged you over the finish line, and if you didn't make it to the line would be pissed off at everyone else because they weren't at his level. The flirting with Chelsea for 2 years straight seemed to give that impression.
Henderson couldn't give a shit about your level, he just wants you to play the best you can, and tried to motivate and support you to that.
For me, the Henderson style captain is infinitely better. I hate giving the captaincy to the best player because they're the best player and you're placating them.
The Captaincy shouldn't have been taken off hyypia when it was, it was just trying to keep Gerrard happy.
