It’s with great sadness that we report the tragic death of Jan Fairclough earlier today.
Jan was wife to David – the man whose goal against St Etienne at Anfield helped the Reds on their way to that first European Cup in 1977 – and mum to their children Tom and Sophie.
Although David is probably remembered best for that goal in 1977 – Liverpool were going out on the away goals rule with the score at 2-2 on aggregate until the then 20-year-old scored the decisive goal – he scored 55 goals in over 150 appearances for the Reds.
Nowadays he is a familiar face and voice to a new generation of Reds through his work for the official TV channel, where he offers insight into Liverpool games at all levels, from the academy to the first team. With David a former team-mate of Kenny Dalglish and Sammy Lee it goes without saying that the loss of Jan will be felt throughout the club.
Described by the club’s official website as “a beautiful woman†she was taken ill on Wednesday and it was found she had suffered a brain aneurysm. She went into a coma and sadly never recovered.
Daughter Sophie, a journalism student, also works for the club’s official TV channel as the presenter of a popular new show which gives supporters a chance to see the most-watched videos from the club’s website. Sophie won the Style 2010 award a year ago at the Grand National and was back modelling at Aintree ahead of this year’s meeting before tragedy struck.
Son Tom is also a student and is now coming to the end of the final year of his degree. He was once a member of Everton’s youth academy but understandably remained a staunch Liverpool supporter.
Liverpool’s Managing Director Ian Ayre led the tributes to Jan, saying: “Everyone at the club who knew David and Jan are devastated by this news. David and Jan were inseparable and our thoughts tonight are with David and his children Sophie and Tom and their extended family.â€
Marina Dalglish, wife of Liverpool manager Kenny, used Twitter to pass her public condolences onto the family, saying: “We are all absolutely devastated at news of Jan’s death. A true friend and we will miss her a lot. Thinking of Tom, Sophie and David.â€
Those sentiments are echoed by Liverpool supporters the world over and tributes will continue to pour in.
