Torres on the new gaffer

FERNANDO TORRES has broken his silence on the Anfield turmoil to plead with fans: Don’t give up on us.

As a bad season turned worse with Wednesday’s defeat at Blackburn, lame duck boss Roy Hodgson paid with his job yesterdaty, ending a painful six-month reign.

Now one of the first tasks for fans’ favourite Kenny Dalglish will be to help an out-of-sorts Torres recapture his form.

But while the Spaniard acknowledges the team have not matched the standards expected from Liverpool, he claims there is still time to turn things around.

And in a frank interview, Torres insisted:

? He WILL NOT leave the club in this transfer window;

? That the fans need to GET BEHIND the team now more than ever;

? And that Hodgson should have been given MORE TIME to get things right.

Torres even promised to discuss a contract extension with Liverpool’s owners NESV at the end of the season – despite continuing rumours that he and the rest of Anfield’s Spanish contingent were still upset at former manager Rafa Benitez’s departure.

The 26-year-old striker quashed suspicions that he is desperate to desert the sinking Anfield ship and wants Reds fans to remain loyal as well.

He said: “More than ever, we need to stick together. We must live in the present, from match to match.

“We need to add more points, win matches and improve our standing in the table.

“That is our challenge and I demand the total help of our supporters in doing that.

“My head is in Liverpool and on helping to save our season.
I am a professional and I always fulfil my deals.

“I haven’t considered leaving, although in football that always depends on the club.

“Liverpool had a lot of success under Rafa Benitez and that is difficult for anyone to follow. Even if the ball hasn’t always dropped our way this season, we have missed out in a lot of matches.â€

Hodgson knew for weeks that his Anfield departure was inevitable but Torres insists he should have been given longer to make his mark.

He said: “A new project in just a few months is never easy. At Liverpool, winning is customary ... but that is also our handicap.

“Who is culpable for our defeats? The coach and the players but it is possible to change things round.

“Our work this season has been damaged by injuries and the nerves which have been created by our bad results.

“I am in good physical condition and with each game I just want to start scoring more goals again.â€

Torres and his new boss can take their minds off the Premier League fight today ... but come up against Manchester United in the FA Cup.

And the Spaniard clings to the hope that victory could reignite their season.

He said: “Morally, it would be enormous to eliminate United at Old Trafford, although it will not be easy.â€

And the striker, whatever he may say, would love to get one over on Sir Alex Ferguson, after the United boss accused him of trying to get John O’Shea sent off the last time the two side met.

Torres insisted: “I’m not worried – I am an honest player.â€

I wouldn't go that far Ossi. I've no real expectations for this game whatsoever. My ambitions go about as far wanting to see a performance where we look like giving a fuck.

Hmmmm Torres has got me believing he actually believes in the NESV project ... hmmm ...

And I'm with Sunny ... no expectations today.

A bit off topic, but an article on Torres prior to today's match.

FERNANDO TORRES and Pepe Reina have vowed never to quit Anfield for arch-rivals Manchester United.

In fact striker Torres even has it written into his contract.

The Spaniard has a £50million exit clause in his Liverpool deal - but United are a named exception and would have to pay even more to snatch him.

Reina does not have a United clause in his contract but he has made it clear he would never go to Old Trafford.

TBH, that just tells me the clubs owners were scared of upsetting the fans by letting Torres go to Utd for 50m so increased the price for them to buyout to 70m.

As for today's game. I just wanna see:

1. Sensible decisions from the bench

2. Players who give a fuck

3. A manager who doesnt concede the game before it starts in his comments, then crawl up the interviewers backside.

That book from Torres is a pile of shit that will be all the more cringe worthy when he leaves the club. Sounds nice though, doesn't it.

Yes, the book is a pile of wank, with 75% of the book filled with pretencious pictures. However that is what he said about Kenny, therefore I posted it - if he leaves, so be it.

We constantly lack a sense of connection with our players and managers, and now we have a manager who is a man so in love with our club that it is unbearable for the man to see us fail. We have a player who, at one point at least, loved (s?) this club and has an affinity with Liverpool and certainly with the manager.

Eternal pessimism and apathy is great isn't it Farky.

I don't have eternal pessimism or apathy. I've had a very tough time recently absolutely hating our manager, and though I'm keeping my feet on the ground about the prospects of the club in the immediate future, I do believe we are heading in the right direction, and Kenny could represent at the least an exorcism of the last of the lingering disease that's been infecting us for the last couple years.

I just don't care about what a ghost writer instructed to give us all a handy has to say. Especially when he writes nothing interesting with an intended audience of 12 year olds.

I'm sure that Torres likes the club, but I don't believe he has a sense of connection with the club that in any way relates to Kenny, and I don't think that these comments about Kenny are reflective of how he may feel about Kenny as his manager.
