Fernando Torres believes that Liverpool's decision to part company with Rafael Benitez was 'best for everyone'.

Speaking ahead of Spain's World Cup clash with Portugal tonight, the striker broke his silence on the departure of the man who brought him to Anfield and insists that a fresh start was needed after Liverpool failed to build on their second-place finish in the Premier League.

Last year saw the club struggle to a seventh place standing in the table after crashing out of the group stages of the Champions League and reaching the semi-final of the Europa League and Torres, who was signed by Benitez in 2007, feels that the time was right to say goodbye.

He said: “At this time I believe it was best for everyone.

“He won everything and last year they demanded too much from him.â€

Questions over the 26-year-old's future continue to linger ahead of Roy Hodgson's imminent appointment later this week but Torres is refusing to be distracted as Vicente del Bosque's side aim to build on their Euro 2008 triumph by going all the way in South Africa.

“They will tell us the situation after the World Cup,†he added.

“All I am focused on is beating Portugal.

“We won the Euros but we can’t live in the past. This is our golden age and we need to seize the moment.

"If Spain don’t win the World Cup it will have been a lost opportunity and who knows if we will get another chance."

*Bit of a throwaway comment really, and he didn't win 'everything'.

Fernando Torres has revealed that he is flattered by rumors linking him with a move to Inter Milan. The Liverpool striker has been linked with an Anfield exit since manager Rafa Benitez left for the San Siro in the close season, and with uncertainties surrounding the Europa League outfit there could be some big changes at the club.

“It is always wonderful to be linked with big clubs. I can’t help but be pleased and flattered,†said the Spanish striker.

“It seems to me fairly normal that the big clubs should be interested in the top players of sides who are struggling.

“For example, Liverpool are out of the Champions League, while Valencia are in a terrible economic situation.

“Aside from rumors, as far as I know there’s nothing concrete.â€

Liverpool fans have already seen changes around Anfield as midfielder Yossi Benayoun has moved on to Chelsea. The winger enjoyed three seasons at Liverpool but saw the club accept a big money offer for him from Chelsea.

Torres is also a known admirer of new Inter Milan boss Rafa Benitez, stressing his value to former club Liverpool.

“He won everything, and last year they demanded too much from him,†said Torres on Benitez’s departure.

If he fucks off this summer after his injury fest that was last season he'll plummet in my estimations.

*torres hears the news*

*shrugs*

He means they expected Rafa to compete for the title despite only limited investment the previous summer. And he's right.
