Tony Barrett is to become chief football writer for Joe.co.uk.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but is this a good move for him? He's a decent journalist. I know barely anything about Joe - Irish, right? Aims at twitter and social media? Is it any good?

It will be better for Tony's presence, but the bigger issue is that 99% of online journalism pays fuck all, because it's supplied for nothing by users. That's a model that doesn't generally reward actual journalists properly, due to the lack of a paying subscribers base, so he will be back in proper newspapers before long.

Newspapers will barely exist in their current form within the next five years. They are in terminal decline.

The only thing I know of of Joe.co.uk is some occasionally pretty funny satirical football videos they churn out.

Didn't know they did proper football journalism

Must be difficult to monetise that kinda site. I thought they were part of a bookies or summat.

Joe.ie started up as a one for all site that posted funny clips, news, gossip, etc that they probably robbed from reddit.

Then they introduced a stand alone sports section of their site. They also expanded into joe.co.uk. I'm really surprised Tony Barrett would go there. Isn't he 'above' that level of journalism? I've always thought of Joe.ie as a click bait website who churn out cliche articles and spam you with a whole host of "10 reasons to watch/do/etc".

Huh just checked out joe.co.uk. I quite like it. Lots of interesting stuff on there. I've whacked it in my favourites tool bar. Cheers.

Maybe things at Joe are getting real.

Tony will be there to satisfy and justify the latest round of investment and funding, as part of their ongoing strategy to "broaden their user base, widen their content offering, drive audience growth across multiple platform devices and establish Joe.co.uk as a viable and credible news source, which will in turn attract improved advertising revenues"

This will last 12 months.

I'm guessing as most things its about money, and he'll get paid a decent wedge to go there.

Yep, I'm not sure they can get to a level where they are seen as a credible news source. If you want to get a handy link to Conor Mcgregor's latest UFC promo or a nice round up of a twitter 'war' between celebs then hit up Joe.ie

Saying that, I haven't read much, if any of their designated sporting content as their site wasn't known for it. The click bait on their Facebook site was getting ridiculous so I just kept scrolling. I don't go their official website. Just follow them on social media.

Will be a bit of a change for him moving to generic football stories rather than Merseyside centric too..
