I know there was some talk about there being no star performers in this edition of the World Cup, but for me, he's the one. He's not a spectacular, eye-catching type of player, but just goes about his work effectively. Bar the game against France, he has scored or assisted against every opponent Germany have played in this tournament (5 goals, 3 assists). He's 24 but looks 10 years older and is really whiny, but I'd gladly have him in my team. He gets things done.

Probably only James Rodriguez (6 goals, 2 assists) comes close to challenging him, but missing out on the later stages of the tournament means he's got fewer chances to shine. Brilliant World Cup by the youngster too.

His movement is so good, every time they would show the overhead camera view for the goals you would see Muller dragging defenders all over the shop and somehow finding himself with space in the box time and again.

All the german side have been doing the basic stuff so well in any situation under great pressure. Control/Technique/Passing/Movement, then they're all extremely fit, well organised and tactically astute.

Muller in particular is fit as fuck, always in the right place and finishes. He doesn't need to be Ronaldo in that German side, they know how to use him.

Bit of a nob though

Muller is a machine. He typifies the German team - fantastic energy, work ethic and very intelligent on and off the ball without technically being at the top.

Wasn't Rafa sniffing around when Torres was on the way out? Strange one as Muller does not seem to be quite as prolific at club level

This twat is gonna keep me from winning my work's World Cup fantasy football.

He's always in the right place at the right time. Cracking player who seems to shit goals.

He is the epitome of a big game player. Always scores when the pressure is on. Place a bet for him to score in the final.
Also, has anyone else noticed his goal celebration? Always the same. Never seen him turn away and run towards the corner flag, for instance. Just usually stands there and pumps his fists then is joined by his team mates.

Yeah, have noticed that, was thinking during that game that the Germans never really go big on their goal celebrations, you don't really see anything flamboyant from them, you get the impression they would get a clip round the ear from Low/teammates if one of them done a Sturridge dance or something similar.

Gotze... after he headed the ball onto his knee and scored through sheer luck. Celebrating in the big "Do you know who I am?" style as if he meant that. 😀

The most flamboyant the Germans ever get: Klose. I think that was for equaling the record.

Muller always produces the goods on the big stage. He does everything so well without being spectacular. A ghost in the box who is a deadly finisher. Would love to get him.

Was talking about him in the pub the other day and saying he's got every chance of beating Klose's record (that's where it started - it annoys me that he's beaten Ronaldo).

Was looking at the list of players who've scored in World Cup games, and noticed this:

No. of players who have scored in double figures = 13
Country they played for: Germany = 5, Brazil = 2, Argentina, England, France, Hungary, Peru, Poland = 1 each

The most efficient of the double figure marksmen did it in one tournament though, and only 3 out of these 13 managed that.
- Gerd Muller (West Germany, 10 in 1970)
- Just Fontaine (France, 13 in 1958) and
- Sandor Kocsis (Hungary, 11 in 1954)

After Muller, the closest anyone has come to scoring double digits in a single campaign is Ronaldo with 8 in 2002.

He's probably one of the world's best right now

He'd be the perfect replacement for Suarez. Shame he's got more sense than to leave Bayern
