Roy Hodgson wants Ashley Young to lead Anfield revival
By JOE BERNSTEIN Last updated at 12:24 AM on 4th July 2010

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young is top of Roy Hodgson's wishlist as he tries to add British players to his Liverpool team.
Hodgson, who has strongly denied that he is not a big enough name to persuade Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to stay, will try to find out this week if Villa manager Martin O'Neill is willing to let Young leave.

The winger, who celebrates his 25th birthday on Friday, made a big early impact at Villa following a £10million move from Watford in 2007.
But inconsistency last season meant he missed out on going to the World Cup with England.
Liverpool have sold Yossi Benayoun to Chelsea for £6.5m and replaced him with 29-year-old Serbia World Cup player Milan Jovanovic, a free agent. Hodgson could also sell Javier Mascherano to Barcelona for £25m and bring in Brazil's Gilberto Silva at a fraction of the price.
He said: 'We would be foolish not to be aware of the importance of homegrown players with the way UEFA and Premier League rules are going. Otherwise we're going to struggle to get our squad numbers together.
'I think the club have been trying to do that already with younger players like Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling but it takes time for them to come through so we might have to go into the transfer market.'
Hodgson is anxious to sort out the futures of Torres and Gerrard but if the Liverpool and England skipper decides to join Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, Liverpool want Holland forward Rafael van der Vaart in part-exchange.
The manager turned down the chance to sign Jovanovic for a fee when he was at Fulham but sees him as a good capture on a free transfer.
He said: 'We have furnished the World Cup with more players than any other team but looking at the squad at Melwood, it did seem very small in terms of seniors.'

I'd be happy to get Young in.

What I cant get my head around though is why people seem to be talking about Mascherano going to Barca for £25m. They sold Toure for more than that!! If we accept 25, Purslow is no better than Parry. We should say £25m + Pedro, or sod off.

The article makes no sense. On the one one hand, we want to bring in more homegrown players, yet Van der Vaart and Gilberto Silva are also mentioned as arrivals.

Young's decent and *could* be great, but I fear he'd cost more than he'd really be worth. Villa never sell cheaply.

I don't think Ashley Young can be or ever will be a great player. If he goes to a good side, like Utd, who will play to his strengths he'll no doubt look much better for it, but he won't be the first 'good' player to be made look excellent by the team he's in (probably a few examples in that current Germany side).

Disagree with that entirely!

I've never been a big fan of this lad.

Like others have said, he'd probably cost more than he's worth.

Yep. The stories in the media make me laugh, they certainly know how to contradict themselves. The same source is probably reporting about how we're skint and we won't see any of the Mascher/Yossi money.

So true mate.

I'm just going to take Broughton at his word on this, he stated that any money we get from sales will all be made available to Roy.

"If" this happens, i've got a feeling that we could have a much better season than many are thinking possible.

We would be far better served chasing Arda Turan/Elia at half the price. Both players having expressed interest in joining us previously.

I would welcome the signing of Ashley Young. It would be great to have a genuine wide player in the team, instead of constantly making players play out of position.

Maybe he's looking at a few options with the possibility that he'll bring in one or two homegrowns and one or two foreigners. ever think of that einstein!

he'd cost too much. he's not that good.

Agreed

I wouldn't buy any English player, especially one who's over-hyped and expensive. The WC is concrete evidence that English players are generally shite, bar the odd few but they'd cost you a bomb, which for that price you could get a few Mesuls or Mullers.

Homegrown rules or not.

Exactly. We could bring in both of them for a Young and improve our side twice as much.

I'll have some of that too. Young has talent but isn't consistent enough, plus Villa would try and nail us to the wall as far as price goes.

Step forward Ryan Babel.

For fucks sake.

Amazing how people's opinions change.

Last summer everyone and his dog wanted Young when he was on fire.

Don't forget Roy has a habbit of getting players who seem not good enough to recapture their best form (see Duff).

I'd love to see Young here and have no doubt he'd be fantastic for us.

Any manager who can turn Bobby Zomora into a potential England player desever a crack at getting the best out of any player.

People need to stop picking out certain peoples posts. Maybe Roy can turn a corner with Babel. I'm prepared to keep an open mind on it, giving the flashes he has shown.

I'm willing to accept that he could get something out of Babel, but not on the wing, and I don't think he'll be around for very long.

Not even Gandalf could weave his magic wand to any good use with Babel, let alone Roy flippin Hodgson.

lol

Don't forget Roy has a habbit

I like Young. I've seen him live a few times and he's always put in terrific performances and looked the best player on the park.

But yeah. he'll inevitably cost too much. We need to buy the next £10M up and coming prospect - not the English, overpriced finished result.
