The who should we sign in January thread

He looked good against us:

Liverpool are monitoring Ajax defender Perr Schuurs following his recent Champions League performance against them.

The Reds could make an offer for the 20-year-old in January in the midst of the centre-back crisis. [The Mirror]

Apparently he had a trial with us 2 or 3 years ago when he was at Sittard but we felt he wasn't ready and then he went to Ajax. Since de Ligt went to Juve he became 1st choice

I’m not for signing a player that sounds like someone having a loud sneeze.

Was really concerned when first VVD, Matip, then Fab was injuried, and yes I know it is early yet but both Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have stepped up so far... Would like to see how they both handle stiffer competition, but feeling more relaxed about things

I was more impressed with Nat than Rhys to be honest. Feels like Philips had more to do and took on more responsibilities. Obviously it comes with the territory since he's older and more experienced.
Also looked like our players did what they could to cover for him, especially Gomez and Trent.
I don't see Rhys starting against City.

Can't disagree with you.. Just love that they both seem relaxed in thier play and not overawed by the occasion in the games that they have played, It bodes well for our CB situation at the club

Nat is 4 years old though, so its not strange that he is further in his development.
I have to say I've been very impressed by Rhys Williams. Assertive, calm, composed and kept it simple.
Wasnt afraid to get stuck in with Duvan Zapata, and also kept the line brilliantly.

I doubt any of them will start against City, as Matip will be given 5 more days to get ready and being back in full training will help tremendously.
But Phillips and Williams can both be used going forward to January, and Rhys seem to have forced himself into having a future at Liverpool now.
Philips should get a decent move in January to a Championship club.

were we not looking at Malick Thiaw..? A centre-back for the German club Schalke

[article]Schalke ace Malick Thiaw is interesting Liverpool.

BILD says Liverpool are in "regular contact" with defender Thiaw. The 19 year-old was first linked with a move to Anfield in March.

Liverpool, through their scouts, are contacting Thiaw on a regular basis.

Schalke academy graduate Thiaw has started the last two Bundesliga matches and scored in the 1-1 draw with Stuttgart last Friday.

The German has a contract with Schalke until 2024 and does not have a release clause.

Liverpool have also been linked with Thiaw's club team-mate Ozan Kabak.

Yes, hope Matip is fit and ready.

We could do a Robertson, Jota type transfer for CB also - out of the blue and a premier league player. We will be linked to fancy European defenders all the way into December. Links will intensify in January. Edwards will pick up someone like Ben Mee for 10 million and complete the transfer in 36 hours. Most of us will be scratching our heads. Some of us will lose it. Three to four weeks of Klopp training and Ben Mee will defend like Baresi and bringing the ball out of defense and ping it around like Alonso.

Carra's height is irrelevant in this discussion though. Sure, there are loads of CBs of that height that have been extremely good.
But we need a dominant CB. Just watch the games versus Sheff Utd and to a degree Everton.
We struggled with the exact same thing when Carra wasnt playing with the likes of Hyypia.
The Carra and Agger CB pairing comes to mind.

Alaba, Kounde, White. They wont do. Get someone like Konate.

Chances of that are really low though. January is a difficult market for a CB given that it's a key position. Doubt many teams, especially in the Premier League, would sell a first choice CB mid-season unless we offered them a king's ransom.

The likelihood is we look for someone who is on an expiring contract; or someone at a club which is desperate for cash. Alternatively, we'll go for an older short-term option.

Tarkowski, Milenkovic, Rudiger, Luiz Felipe, Zagadou and Felipe all have 18 months left on their contracts.
