I just have him there because he's so dogged and hard working. He'd really 'patrol' that part of the field. I think his first touch is bad when the ball is passed to him, under my system no one would ever voluntarily pass to Kuyt. His second touch is usually a tackle, I'm just bringing that forward to his first touch. He could also 'break' from midfield better than Kuyt.
It's just an idea. He definitely has the right attitude for DM.

Granted, Meireles is not a proper holding midfielder and he likes to go forward and find himself in attacking positions but thats where he plays with Portugal and was playing with Porto.
That will make us play higher on the pitch and put more pressure on the oponent in their own half.
With 2 holding midfielders we're just playing too deep and inviting pressure on our defence, which is very shaky since Carra's injury.
Meireles is good enough play there on his own, with Gerrard in front of him.
