The Real Moreno

I like him a lot, always been a fan. He deserved much of the criticism he got but he is young and we're now seeing good levels of improvement.

Yeah, I'm with you. I always liked him. And while last night's opening goal wasn't exactly wonderful defending from him or Can, I'm not sure we should be looking to a 5 foot 7 left-back to be clearing the ball with his head in our box. That's what goalkeepers and central defenders are for.

He wouldn't have had to clear the ball with his head if he'd just blocked Mane's run. There are more ways to defend a cross than by heading the ball away , stopping the opposition from getting to the ball is often just as effective.
He's improved some aspects of his game this season but his defensive positioning isn't good enough yet.

Agree with that too. And admittedly Mane is hardly Andy Carrol either.

he does a hell of a lot of ball watching though. Some great assets, but no sign of the flaws evaporating.

He's f*cking rubbish at defending.

Yet again today he sat looking at the ball while his man glided in and headed home unopposed.

A few last ditch tackles where he relies on his pace doesn't cover the fact he's not a good defender.

Sell Sell Sell.

I find it amazing so many people get blindsided by a few sprints up the pitch and a bit of passion.

His passing in the final third is still awful.
His crossing is abysmal.
His decision making is woeful in the final third.

If Gomez or Flanno were fit I'd have them in ahead of him in a heartbeat.

He's lucky he's our own fit option at the moment and a player I'd happy to sell.
You're trying to hard Dreamy, everyone can see through this act now.

He does make mistakes, but what young defenders don't? His positive attributes far outweigh his negatives, he supports the attack well, he's quick, he's great at getting back when we're hit on the break and he looks like he has the occasional Worldy in him. He has all the raw ability to suggest he can become a top class full back.

Dreamy just thinks he was proven right somewhat over his idea of selling 37 goals in 47 league starts, Daniel Sturridge. So he's now on a roll.

Not at all. I would say 99% of people don't agree regarding Sturridge so I hardly think "I'm on a roll"
He doesn't support the attack well at all. He receives the ball and invariably puts in a shite cross, gets his cross blocked or runs into a dead.
Yes he is quick which saves him when he's horribly out of position.
He's still making the same mistakes he made in first few games last year.
I like his passion and pace but he is missing almost everything a great full back possesses.

I guess time will tell and I certainly hope he turns into the Ashley Cole or Lizarazu most think he can be.

Trying to hard at what exactly?

There is loads I'm loving about us and some players right now, but I'm not blind either to the fact that we massively over react with a few good results or some flashes of brilliance from some players.

Case in point Moreno is miles away from the level needed to hold down the left back roll long term and challenge for the highest honours.

I don't know if you saw the game but last night he assisted Origi for the 3rd goal (in truth it would probably would have been a goal whether Origi got a touch or not) and picked up Ibe with a very intelligent and deliberate cross for the 5th goal. He also led all our players last night with chances created (3). His minutes per goal or assist ratio is just behind Lallana and way above Can, Allen and Clyne. In short, that's a really bad timing for you to criticize his attacking contribution.

His shot for the 3rd goal and cross for the fifth goal was good, granted he had all the time in the world to pick Ibe out, not something he normally gets.

I'd be more interested in his passing stats in the final third and his cross completion stats than just assist per minute.

He didn't have all the time in the World to pick him out, he got to the byline, looked up, saw three or four Southampton defenders picking up players and decisively cut the ball back perfectly weighted to Ibe. It wasn't something he had alot of time to do, once he got to the byline he looked up straight away and picked the right ball instantly, as any top player would.

I also think you're overestimating the amount of goals and assists that top fullbacks do get.

Dreamy, you're chatting absolute shit about Moreno, the only explanations are that you're either trolling, or stuck 6 months in the past, he's been one of our best players post Rodgers.

It would be good to compare these stats with other full-backs in the league (winks at @KingBinny), but a couple of things jump out immediately from these stats:
  1. Discipline. No reds, no yellows, only 8 fouls committed overall over the whole season (!!). And it's not like he doesn't tackle, quite the contrary.
  2. Passing accuracy is pretty good, but maybe crossing could be better.
  3. 24 chances created – that looks like a huge number over 13 games; I suspect that puts him in the top 5 if not top 3 in the team.

The fact he didn't get his head up before then just highlights my point.
I'm not going to change anyone's opinion so I'll leave this debate for later in the season and hopefully I'll be saying he has improved massively by then

He already has massively improved!

1/6 crosses I wonder how that compares to other fb's?
I already knew he was shite in the air but that's too big a deal for a fb as long as he positions himself well which he hasn't been doing.
Blue = 1st
Green = 2nd
Orange = 3rd

He ball watches too much for my liking. Twice we've conceded goals with a player running right past moreno to head to ball into the net. How he doesn't see these runners is a joke.
