The players perspective

People seem to be forgetting that Klopp was trying to slightly change the way Dortmund played in their last season, so he may have something quite different in mind for us if/when he takes over. Assuming we'll play this 'gegenpress' is like assuming he's going to raid Dortmund for players; it may happy but we shouldn't take it for granted.

Certainly without a pre-season to implement his ideas he's not going to have the fitness levels to put in place a high-pressing system immediately, and probably not until next season. The German League also has a winter break, which is therefore more forgiving fitness-wise.

Was he trying to change or was it forced on him because they had so many problems? It sounds a bit familiar really.

This is a great discussion. I like what rurikbird is saying. I think given the experience of some of our ex - german league players it will be an advantage for the new coach plus if what your saying about him wanting to sign the likes of benteke before we may have someone who actually has a plan on how he wants some of our expensive players to be used rather than experimenting. This is a good base from him to start and am hoping that our squad of players is not as bad aa Rodgers was making them look with his constant tinkering bollox.

A bit of both. Fitness-wise it was a difficult system to maintain. He was keeping it for the bigger games and changing it up against lesser sides. Teams had started to be more effective in countering it as well; Bayern had adapted to it, and others had too. So he was in the process of changing it, which caused difficulties, and he had a fair few injuries as well.

Fair enough. Teams started to become wise to us doing it too, so you could see the need to adjust it for the longterm and also that we had to be a bit more tactical against teams like Chelsea. So yeah, there's alot to work on, rather than pigeon holing ourselves straight away. But if we have a general way of playing, then Klopp's system doesn't seem that far removed.

Didi's prospective

1. Playing beautiful football & being successful is almost impossible. Get back to basics & don't be afraid to be direct. 2. Change the mentality. Finishing 2nd is not good enough! 3. LFC need a holding midfielder of international class. 4. Eradicate the mentality of living in the past. There's talk of ex-players coming back to coach but it's not needed. He should bring in fresh people he trusts'

I can see any German speaking players starting in the short term because he will think he can communicate better with them and he prolly knows them better.

Long term, I don't think he'll get on with Sturridge or Lovren.

I think he'll build around Allen, Moreno, Ings, Benteke, Markovic, Gomez, Firmino.

Having watched loads of you tubes of Dortmund this week I just have a feeling he'll have a massive thing for Allen!

Tony Barrett mentioned in his webchat that Klopp stopped pursuing Benteke at Dortmund because questions arose whether he was able to press and lead the line.

Gundogan is a hardworking DM/CM imo, but he's quicker and has more to his game than Lucas. Actually Can is closer to Gundogan than Lucas.
That's the only thing that bothers me with Lucas, he's too one dimensional. We could do with a bit more from a player in that position.

Gundogan isn't a DM so let's forget that idea !

Dortmund had a ton of injuries in the 1st half of the season and yet, according to a Dortmund fan on red cafe, they still had the 2nd most shots on target and all attacking stats were good, bar the ball just wouldn't go in the net, compounded by a surprising amount of individual errors at the back (he quoted 10) leading to goals, supposedly due to over-pressing for goals.
Note that they were 17th/18th at Xmas and yet after the winter break everything was back to normal. They were the second best team in the second half of the season and ended up finishing 7th though their record after the break was the 2nd best in the BL.

Dortmund fans say it was because they were priced out .... since Dortmund's record signing is 23M pounds this seems to be far more likely and Barrett's comments just a smokescreen to cover themselves (if of course those 'questions' are even true).

Read LFC had a small article on which 10 players could benefit / lose out from Klopp's appointment. Obviously this is pertinent to this thread because the personnel in Modo's good opening post could change.

Winners : Can (though I'm not so sure about this one), Benteke (Klopp known to like him), Sakho, Moreno, Firmino (Klopp is a known fan)
Losers : Milner, Skrtel, Lovren, Mignolet (last chance saloon), Allen (BR fav. but not strong enough for Klopp team).

I would think Ings would also be a winner and Sturridge has the pace, and just as importantly, finishing power, that Klopp loves. We have no-one else bar Ibe with Studge's pace. He's a near certainty if Klopp attempts to replicate his formation/tactics at Dortmund.
I can see Gomez getting fast tracked to CB and Henderson (creative, scores, energy) being a CM mainstay.
Lucas may start will not beyond this season (maybe Klopp can work some magic on Can - I don't see it though, I think that will be the first position he targets in Jan/June).
Lallana will see game time for his pressing but I don't know if Klopp will put up with his failure to last past 70-75 mins (maybe a good backup).

It gets better and better:

Jurgen Klopp's arrival at Liverpool may signal a change of fortunes for the on-loan Samed Yesil.
German striker Samed Yesil hopes the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager can help him fight his way into contention.
Yesil, 21, is out on a season-long loan at Swiss club FC Luzern having failed to impress Brendan Rodgers.
But the striker, who has never made a Premier League appearance, hopes Klopp's arrival leads to a change of fortunes.
"Probably I am coming back to the Reds and I am pretty excited about it because obviously he is German and I am a German as well," Yesil told Omnisport.
"So the communication will be a lot easier for me. In addition he is a guy that supports young players and that excites me as well."
Yesil, who has also spent time at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, described Klopp's attacking style as "one of the best".
He also backed the former Borussia Dortmund coach to help Liverpool back to their successful ways.

No one is giving Lovren a fighting chance? He's limited but shown he can be decent in a similar high-press setup to Klopp's Dortmund.

Speaking of Yesil, I wonder about the super outliers like him, McLaughlin and Smith. For the latter two it's an opportunity like no other to make the slightest of impressions on Klopp.

Lovren started to play some decent stuff towards the end of last season. It hasn't been in evidence this time around, but Klopp will defo be giving everyone a chance so I reckon we should as well.

McLaughlin's a tricky one to decide. I'm told he's started well at Aberdeen, so it may be best to let him continue with that for now.

.

I think that Lovren is a dark horse. He may just respond to a fellow German speaker.

I don't get this sudden Lovren chin-stroking. Absence makes the heart grow fonder eh ! His fuck-ups generally have nothing to do with the defence formation / communication, they are pure and simple brain farts.

Absinthe gives you terrible wind, like a motorbike starting up. Hence the saying: absinthe makes the fart go Honda.

More seriously: no, Froggy, it isn't just a case of short memories. I've given my reason above. This may come to nothing, but the guy should be given the same chance as anyone else under a new manager.

If it's a case of brain farts, (a lack of) concentration and confidence can be fixed by a good coach and sound organisation of the defense.

Yeah. Like running past the on-coming attacker, missing him by miles. You could practically see the attacker (I forget who) look behind him thinking WTF !

... or he could just be out and out shite. For me he's under the Rodgers halo of horrible defending. We shall see.

Oh there are definitely players in our squad that are beyond saving.
It'll be interesting to see Klopp's take.

Judging from this thread, I guess Lovren, Allen, Lucas and Lallana will be starting against Spurs.
