even if everything 'that twat' said is true. grow up
I don't get the whole ignore thing, but anyway, of course what you said is true, it's been obvious to most since the summer and even before that Lucas-Mascherano is a mistake, and our team has difficulties.

At the beginning of the season I said "we just put out an imbalanced team, as we will have to frequently this season, when any one of a number of key players get injured."

It was an atrocious summer that filled me with pessimism, but I didn't think these things would get so bad. The point of this thread is one of the things that had unexpectedly killed us is our defense turning to shit.

do with the topic of this thread.

Farky please don't quote the twat unless absolutely essential for context as it detracts from the "Ignore" functionality

I thought we were desperately unlucky tonight, that's all.

Another day we'd have won that 3 or 4-1.

We've had fuck all in the way of luck this season. I'd actually be worried were we to get in a penalty shoot out situation our luck's that bad! Sure we're not strong enough in many areas, but we've been shit on by fate countless times already.

the vast majority of this thread you'll find is not about our defence.

tonight imo also wasn't about our defence, even with all that pressure and possession i only remember their keeper making the sequence of saves that finally led to n'gog's goal and a long distance effort by masch.

he also saved from yossi but kuyt had fouled someone in the buildup.

we're not testing the opposition keeper enough.

I think our poor form is about our defense as much as anything else. The only way we'd see our way through the weak midfield Rafa gambled on, and our inability to break down teams with our injury ravaged attack is by grinding out 1-0s. This is how we've won at many other points during Rafa's reign. We'd be in the CL easily were it not for late goals which are completely uncharacteristic.

.... But at the moment we're relying on players who wouldn't get near Chelsea or Man Utd's first team to drag us up to the top of the tree. ....
Normally Insua, Lucas and Ngog (who is actually quite promising) wouldn't be near OUR first team
I wouldn't agree about not being near our first team. Insua and Aurelio seem to be pretty much on a level playing field with Aurelio being so injury prone. He would definitely be on the bench at least. Lucas has been a first choice CM all season, and if he is indeed dropped for Aquilani, would still be in the first team. He played 25 games last season. I agree with you on N'gog, but he seems to be our second striker. Fernando, bless him, is very injury prone, so N'gog is bound to get quite a few outings this term. I don't mind having these players around, but we're relying on these players a lot. We should have a better left back than both Aurelio and Insua, we should have a better centre midfielder than Lucas, and we shouldn't have a 19 year old prospect as our only other striker.

Another thing, as good as Aquilani may be, Rafa clearly knew of his injury, clearly thought Lucas was good enough to at least deputise for him for nearly half a season and we're paying for that now. Lucas has done OK, but that's it. That's because he's just OK. Man Utd or Chelsea don't have any players that are just OK in such crucial positions for long periods of time.
Excellent post, agree with every single word. This is Liverpool football club, we shouldn't be relying on so many shit players to fill in for such long periods!

But yeah Oncy, I do know we have had bad luck to a degree, but Benitez has brought in these players over 5 years and this is his squad. It's still not good enough.
Well tonight alone we were missing our first choice left back, our first choice centre back, our creative midfielder, our support striker and our centre forward. We conceeded a wonder strike that he'll never score again. We had 27 shots and 78% possession. So forgive me if i dont get on his back just yet.
When will people just accept that benitez is fucking us big time! its his team and playing players like lucas who have no fucking clue is the reason we are doing so shit! enough with the excuses about injuries.. other teams have injuries aswell and they seem to cope. Yeah we had 27 shots, but how many were on target? yeah 78% possesion but you dont win games by possesion, you win them by scoring. as for the wonder strike by jerome, it happens in our game so just get over it and move on! Benitez is at fault and 8wins, 8 losses and 2 draws is absolutely fucking pathetic

So Benitez was supposed to play who in midfield?

He should have made better signings over the last 3 years and played them in midfield really!

If he had not been so stubborn and a bit more canny he would have got Gareth Barry in when he had the opportunity early in the summer and its the little mistakes that add up to the big mistakes which leave us were we are now.

Its all easy in hindsight I know, but these errors all add up and here we find ourselves.

Not all his fault by any means the owners hurt us on that one too, but he made o neill dig his heels in the previous year so he would not want to sell him to us and then left it for months and City stepped in while we dithered.

he could and should have bought aquilani on earlier last night.

over the course of this season he should have played gerrard in midfield.

Benitez took a gamble on a Lucas/Mascherano-pairing before Aquilani was fit...and that has cost us. What the f*ck is Lucas about except passing the ball sideways? I have been wondering that for a long time now...he isn´t a defensive midfielder, he isn´t a creative one and he isn´t a ball winner. What´s left? Crap! He´s crap!

Benitez isn´t stupid. He must know we need a lb, a rw and a striker but we don´t have the money. And yes: He should have been able to sign enough quality for these spots during his years at the club.

Can't say that if Benitez brought on Aqua earlier that it'd have been a sure-shot success, but I hear you on playing Gerrard in midfield instead. However, that would've meant probably Babel or Voronin being in the team.. *horror*
