We've got our excellent record of bringing kids through from our Academy though.

I was watching Adam Hamill have yet another good game for Barnsley the other week and the commentator said "such an exciting young prospect, no wonder there are so many Premier League clubs keeping an eye on him"........................

Rafa could and should have given Hamill a chance.
No chance mate.

I've seen Barnsley play a few times this season, and not once has he stood out. He's not quick, has one-trick, no left foot, and invariably holds onto the ball for far too long.

I'm not having it.
There is a dearth of talented wide-left players in the English Leagues at present and because of that he probably stands out more than his talent deserves. I've seen him a few times and he does look good at that level and i do think he could possibly play for a lower-level EPL team but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of him in Carling Cup games just so we could be sure we weren't giving away a possible better option than Babel.

Apparently we have a decent sell-on clause attached to his contract so if he were to be sold to the EPL for a decent fee at least we would gain that way.

If it does turn out to be the case that he has the choice of any of the top 4 I don't think he will be that convinced of his chances of playing first team football any time in the near future for us.
The same reason might not help Chelsea's chances either.

United or Arsenal I suspect. Although it could just be that he will choose to stay where he is for the time being. If he is that good and already playing in the first team then his chance will come again. Playing regularly in the Championship isn't going to destroy a good player and might even help him more than playing in the reserves at a top club.
Nonesense, young players who are good enough will get chances, look at our squad and it's only going to get weaker with zero net investment. Already Kelly has played in the CL for example, Insua and Ngog are 19 year olds and Spearing started a league game
Excellent - that's just the line we should use when pitching to young players isn't it?

"Come to Liverpool, we're only gonna get weaker you know!"

My point, if you can understand it, was that I don't think HE will be that convinced that he can get into the first team at Liverpool. Faced with the choice of Arsenal, where the media can't get enough to telling everyone who will listen about their fabulous youth policy, United, whose manager raves about at least a couple of his young stars each season, and Liverpool, where the odd young player might play the odd game when everyone is injured only to lose his place again, and where stories are now hitting the press of young players threatening to leave because they can't see a way through, what would convince him to choose Liverpool?

Do you mean Hammill? It was his attitude that let him down, not his ability. Or Eccleston? We don't know why he's stalled on signing a new contract. I can't think who else you mean, because the mood is now dramatically more positive about this than it's been for years among the youth and reserve players.

But all in all our record with youngsters hasn't been great in the last few years, has it? Apart from Insua maybe.

I was referring to Eccleston, and there was also a story about LDV not being happy.

Whether these are for entirely different reasons or are in reality not even true doesn't matter a great deal. My point was about the perception young players might have about their chances at Liverpool compared to elsewhere.

Insua
Spearing
Kelly
Ayala

have all made the step up in recent times.

Does 'the step out' mean the odd game when everyone else is injured or being rested or as a regular first teamer?

I would only say that out of those Insua has actually made the step up.

I agree, but it's changing now. There hasn't been such a promising time to join LFC as a young player for a very long time. Dalglish is there, the man who nurtured loads of great young Barca players is there, and the manager is more involved than any Liverpool manager's been since, well, Kenny. So I take the point but I do think it's changing.

I meant that they had appeared for the first team is all.
Of course Insua is the only one who can be considered a regular out of the players I listed.
But the other three have made the 'step up' from the reserve squad.

I know we may be playing pretty shit right now, but these lads have worked through the ranks and appeared for Liverpool FC's first team. That is an amazing acheivement for them. People have written off Spearing after one pretty poor performance against Sunderland. Liverpool career over, like that. Is it bollocks, this is where he has to show balls. To come back from that and prove he is good enough for the first team. Sure he may not make it, but he has to be given time.

Don't get me wrong I actually do agree with you and I certainly haven't written off Spearing or any of the others. The two issues that concern me are that firstly will these players who have played one or two games be allowed further chances in the first team to progress? I certainly hope so, and to be fair this is where a small squad can be something of an advantage.

And secondly as I mentioned previously there is the issue of perception from outside. We know the situation looks more promising than certainly it did a few years ago but for young players looking for a club to join will it appear that way right now?

Insua's the only one who counts really, and he's been pretty shit this season.
