The Next Rooney?

Pesam - know anything about this lad?

Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea will be involved in an unprecedented scramble to sign 16-year-old striker Connor Wickham from Ipswich in January.

Wickham, the youngest first-team player in Ipswich's history, is regarded in the game as the most exciting young Englishman to emerge since Wayne Rooney.

He added to his fast-growing reputation with a hat-trick for England Under-17s a fortnight ago and Roy Keane's club fear he may be lured away before he can sign a professional contract in March.

The Premier League's Big Four are all chasing him - the first time that has happened with a teenager in England - with Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger both taking a keen interest, while Aston Villa and Tottenham are also trying to get him.

A club source said: 'Whenever Wickham is down to play for the first team or reserves, two dozen scouts emerge out of nowhere to watch him. The consensus is he's as good as Rooney was at that age but is a lot bigger.'

Colchester-born Wickham is already 6ft 3in and has still to agree a contract at Ipswich, leaving them vulnerable to approaches from the big clubs. Although Ipswich would be in line for compensation, a fee would have to be decided by tribunal should all parties be unable to agree a figure.

In 2008 Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan said he felt 'mugged and brutalised' after being awarded just £700,000 when John Bostock left the Championship club to join Spurs.

Bostock yesterday scored twice for Brentford, where he is on loan from Spurs, in the 2-2 draw against Millwall in their League One match at Griffin Park.

Wickham became Ipswich's youngest player when he made his debut against Doncaster Rovers last season aged just 16 years and 11 days.

He scored his first senior goals in the Carling Cup against Shrewsbury this season and, although manager Keane has used him mainly as a substitute, he is likely to start at home to Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday as Ipswich chase only their second win of the season.

Wickham, who can officially turn professional only on his 17th birthday on March 31, scored a hat-trick in 21 minutes for England in the UEFA Under 17s Championship in a 4-0 win against Azerbaijan in Baku, helping to book his country's place in next year's elite round.

Keane has been trying to shield the player against high expectations, but the Irishman did say: 'Connor is a great talent, there's no doubt about that.'

Let's hope tolerating Roy Keane has put the lad off United for life.

Have we any hope of getting him if the other 3 are interested. Like Arsenal have the Academy thing going on and the other 2 just have more money!! Hope he's a liverpool fan!!

We've got our excellent record of bringing kids through from our Academy though.

'Unprecedented' my arse. All four clubs were after Walcott, weren't they? And Ramsey. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.

Apparently Walcott was a Liverpool fan, that didn't help

Sunny the squad is so thin he could be in the first team within the week if we already had him....

Other teams have more appeal due to money, history of bringing on youth players, being down south, The Keane effect and saddest of all they have more chances of providing the lad with medals.

It would take enormous ambition/faith on his part to want to join us.

I've seen him a couple of times LTW and he is impressive. He is very assured for someone so young, you can tell he believes in his own ability and isn't afraid to shoot when colleagues are shouting for a pass. The Ipswich fans have been raving about him for some time and there is pressure on him to be their saviour.

From the glimpses I've seen he looks to have all the attributes required (as does Shelvey at Charlton) but it is impossible at this stage to say whether or not his progression will be like LeTallec (sorry) or Rooney.

I was watching Adam Hamill have yet another good game for Barnsley the other week and the commentator said "such an exciting young prospect, no wonder there are so many Premier League clubs keeping an eye on him"........................

Rafa could and should have given Hamill a chance.

Ipswich is one of the few places where a good young prospect can emerge with relatively little or no publicity. I remember a local TV news crew going into Ipswich city centre to ask shoppers about an exciting young reserve player called Kieron Dyer. Most fans claimed they hadn't heard of him, until this one bloke said, 'Yeah, I know him'. The interviewer, hugely relieved, asked how he did. He said: 'Er, I'm Kieron Dyer'. The clip is still out there somewhere.

Isn't Walcott a Liverpool fan and look at where he ended up!

Nope, true story. The female reporter was suitably embarrassed, but it put off local news programmes from doing any similar stories!

*sobs*

If it does turn out to be the case that he has the choice of any of the top 4 I don't think he will be that convinced of his chances of playing first team football any time in the near future for us.
The same reason might not help Chelsea's chances either.

United or Arsenal I suspect. Although it could just be that he will choose to stay where he is for the time being. If he is that good and already playing in the first team then his chance will come again. Playing regularly in the Championship isn't going to destroy a good player and might even help him more than playing in the reserves at a top club.

Incidently, we hear all the time about how fantastic the scouting departments are at big clubs and how they basically hoover up all the young talent for their academies, so why has the 'next Rooney' ended up getting as far as the first team with fucking Ipswich before the top clubs have noticed him?

Well, I think he only joined them this year (and that was as a scholar), so it's not as though he's been on the books for a while.

Yeah but that kinda makes it worse in a way. I assume he must have played for someone, somewhere at youth level. If a brilliant player is out there you'd think a top club would have noticed, especially if he is a lot bigger and stronger than the other kids.

I'm not saying its a bad thing at all but you hear about how good the scouting is at top clubs yet he was pretty much noticed by them.

The frantic race for his signature will see Ipswich get about £10 million for him. Or £5 million and some touching from Arsene.

Nonesense, young players who are good enough will get chances, look at our squad and it's only going to get weaker with zero net investment. Already Kelly has played in the CL for example, Insua and Ngog are 19 year olds and Spearing started a league game

Indeed. You hear all this negative stuff about Rafa not playing any kids. Ngog has played in his teens for us, likewise Isua, Lucas & Babel both played at 21, not to mention Ayala, Kelly and Spearing. Maybe Liverpool are the team for young, good players.

No chance mate.

I've seen Barnsley play a few times this season, and not once has he stood out. He's not quick, has one-trick, no left foot, and invariably holds onto the ball for far too long.

I'm not having it.
