@Karlton81: I'm hearing that this apparent Iker Muniaín rejected bid by #LFC is true.

2 years left on his contract. Had a shite season 2012/13 which has affected his transfer value.
He's ace though and would be a great signing.
20 years old and with all the potential in the world.

Read the bid was 20 mill + 5 in add ons.

Bilbao are still going to demand top whack for their remaining crown jewel shit season or not.

I didn't watch much of Bilbao last year but know they had a tough time due to the absence of certain players and other factors, but if Munian had a shit season on an individual basis, what were the reasons for that?

according to the Metro (!) he had a 29.5m clause last year...

Manchester United will have to find £29.5million if they are serious about signing Iker Muniain, the Athletic Bilbao forward’s agent has revealed.
The 19-year-old came to Sir Alex Ferguson’s attention when the Basque club knocked United out of the Europa League.

Muniain scored in the 3-1 first leg victory at Old Trafford and again impressed in the return, which Athletic won 2-1.
Ferguson is now keen to land the youngster, who made his international debut for Spain earlier in the season, but United are not the only club interested.
Juventus have also been linked with him, but his representative, Jesus Medina, thinks it is unlikely Muniain will end up in Italy.
He told Calciomercato.com: ‘Athletic do not want to sell. Whoever wants him must pay his buyout clause at €36million (£29.5million).’
United do have that kind of money available for the summer transfer window, but are unlikely to spend that much on a player with so little experience.
The Red Devils have also been credited with an interest in Muniain’s Athletic team-mates Oscar de Marcos, Javi Martinez and Ander Herrera, but will face strong competition from Europe’s biggest clubs for their signatures.

Muniain: I will not make excuses for last season

by Tre Atkinson | Posted on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

Athletic Club Bilbao attacker Iker Muniain has spoken out on his treatment by the press while admitting that last season was very difficult but that he now has a new mindset.
Iker Muniain was able to speak to the press following a training session and admitted that he finally felt that he was back to his best physically.
“I feel pretty good mentally and physically, with batteries recharged. I’ve been good physically. I worked during the holidays to be at my best when I came back. I am ready for an exciting season with a new coach who has new ideas that will help us succeed.”
The Basque forward also explained his reasons for returning to training ahead of schedule claiming that he did not want to be behind his teammates in preparation for the new season.
“I had planned to just start the holidays. But I decided to return before the last few days because I had missed the preseason due to the selection [Spain U-21] and I noticed that hurt me last year. I decided to come early so that I would be just as ready as the rest of the group.”
Muniain then turned his attention to new manager Ernesto Valverde stating that the new project “looks good” while also declaring his delight with his new coach.
“Each coach has an idea. Bielsa had a good vision. Valverde has a different way of seeing that I am happy about. I am optimistic that change will be very good.”
The Athletic Club man then spoke out on more pressing issues as he addressed the difficulty he endured last season.
“It [last season] was a little bit of everything. There were times last season where I felt badly physically and mentally, but I will not make excuses. My battery is recharged and my mind is focused on the preseason.”
There have also been many negative reports regarding the 20-year-old that he took little time to address.
“I am not stupid. I know what is published and what is not. Players are used to this; it’s something we have to live with. It does not affect me at all. In my private life, especially on vacation, I do what I want. There are certainly people who examined it with a magnifying glass to try and criticize everything I do, but do not worry about it.”
Lastly, Muniain thanked captain and teammates Carlos Gurpegui who recently stood up for him in the face of a negative media report.
“He’s the captain and he wants to protect the players. He realized that wrong things were being published. He did not like it and went to defend me.”

What has happened to Iker Muniain?

OUTSIDE OF THE BOOT JANUARY 12, 2013 2
Every season a young player catches everyone’s eyes, and becomes the next big thing, last season a certain Iker Muniain fell into this category, but after a horrible start to this campaign the young Athletic Bilbao winger seems to have lost his way.
Last year got off to a great start for Muniain, his club were doing well in Europe, with the player earning his first call up to the Spanish national side for a friendly with Venezuela, a match the country won 5-0.
In the Europa league Athletic Bilbao became everybody’s favourite team to watch, as the young pretenders went on to the final, knocking out the likes of Manchester United, and Schalke, with Muniain ,the dazzler, behind striker Fernando Llorente.
This earned him praise from all around Europe with Sir Alex Ferguson amongst the admirers, while comparisons to Lionel Messi, and Ronaldo were being made, as well as calls for the player to be taken by Vicente del Bosque to Euro 2012.
Athletic Bilbao went on to lose, not only the Europa league final 3-0 to Atletico Madrid, but also the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona by the same scoreline, as Muniain failed to make the cut for Euro 2012, and Athletic finished a disappointing 10th in La Liga. A season that promised so much for the 19 year old left him empty handed.
From this point on everything seems to have gone downhill for not only the youngster, but also for his club as well. Starting with the Olympic games in London, with Spain despite being favourites exiting the competition in the group stages, after failing to win any of their games.
Muniain was injured for the first loss against Japan, returning for the next game against Honduras, but the youngster showed a petty side to his game we perhaps hadn’t seen before as Spain lost 1-0 knocking them out of the tournament. The Athletic star was lucky to not see red as he barged into the referee after not receiving a penalty.
Off the field the players club was going through turmoil, with star player Javi Martinez leaving for Bayern Munich, and striker Fernando Llorente also indicating he wanted to leave. Manager Marcelo Bielsa was also gaining headlines for getting involved in a fight with workers building the clubs new stadium, whilst seemingly quitting the club before rejoining soon after.

This did not help the club get off to a good start in La Liga, and with a lack of signings as well, confidence around San Mames appeared to be all but gone. For Muniain, the new season seemed to bring a new role, as instead of playing on the left he was now more central behind the striker, the position the likes of Juan Mata, or David Silva play for their clubs.
Although this is a swap the player himself wanted he seems to be struggling to adapt to his new position, while the fact he played around 59 games the season before also seems to be causing the youngster to lose his form.
So far this year Muniain has made 27 appearances, scoring only once as Athletic exited the Europa league in the group stages, and find themselves in a relegation battle at the bottom of the league after only six wins in 19 games.
In his last match against Rayo Vallecano, the player nicknamed “Bart” for the mischief he creates, looked a shadow of the player he was last year, and looked more than frustrated after being substituted with his side losing 2-0.
It is easy to forget that Muniain is still only 20 years old, and unlike other youngsters who let fame get to their head, he is still grounded, and knows there is a lot of hard work to be done if he is to become one of the worlds best players.
However he definitely has all the attributes needed, break neck speed with the ball at feet, excellent ball control allowing him to coast past people with ease, and with the ball distribution improving the only area the player needs to work on is scoring goals.
It may take a change of scenery for Muniain to reclaim the form that made him so sought after last season, with so much going on behind the scenes at Athletic Bilbao not helping anyone. If he did decide to leave San Mames there is no doubt every top club in Europe will be scrambling for his signature, with Barcelona, and Real Madrid at the front of the queue.
As the old saying goes, form is temporary, class is permanent, and i hope this is true of Muniain, with a new year beginning it gives the player the chance to show exactly why he was at the top of everyone’s ”one to watch” lists at the beginning of the season.

Just watching him now vs Madrid, looks shit so far. Done nothing and not looked like doing anything when he's had the ball in the opening 1/2hr.

I was wondering the other week whether Isco will actually prove to be the better buy (over Neymar). He's having no problems making the step up and just looks like he's going to become even better.

A little soon to say IMO. Coming to Europe is a big change for Neymar, who's still very young. Isco is looking the business though.
