The master tactician

I think he is a master tactician, but - as he's admitted himself - complex, subtle tactics just don't work in the PL, which is why he's generally failed domestically. What he lacks is the flexibility to stop thinking of football as a human version of Stratego.

His tactics are simple..

Put on a defensive team with little attacking threat.

Not concede and if we score thats a bonus, atleast we didnt lose.

Play zonal marking, which our players have no clue about and get raped from set pieces.

Make subs very late in the game so they have little chance to change the game.

Do nothing all game and then with 15mins to go, take off an attacker for another attacker, or a defender for a defender or a midfielder for a midfielder and hope for the best.

Am i missing anything? ???

Odd how, other this season, our defensive record is very good.

Agree that his past accomplishments should not be denegrated at all - He won a European Cup with Djime Traore and Milan Baros, ffs! - but I do agree that 'tactical genius' tags are too generous.

Yes, he has been able to plan a successful strategy versus superior teams whilst here. Full credit for that, especially from 2005 - 2007. But he's made far too many suicidal selections, formations and substitutions since then, particularly against lesser opposition to be considered a genius.

Credit where it's due, by all means. But likewise critisism.

Spot on.

I had the same discussion with my brother the other day.
I came to the conclusion that we don't have the right players to fully utilise Rafa's system.
That's mainly down to Rafa's transfer dealings of course.
But he proved that it worked in Valencia, they were down right unbeatable.

Bottom line is that if we had the right players, we'd probably be premier league champions.
Having Alonso in the middle was a step in the right direction. Add Robben, a proper left back and another striker and we'd be in dreamland.

I never wrote anything about our defensive record being good or not, although our attacking record this season is quite pathetic.

But i guess conceding very late goals which cost us champions league and some points in the epl is classified as a good defensive record.

Im not sure what games you watch but we have been poor in defence this season especially from set pieces..
