Has got fucking LUCIO in it.

They've selected defenders, midfielders, and strikers, then they open up a poll for readers to choose their selections. Here's the Guardian writers selections thus far;

--------------------?????????---------------------

CAFU------LUCIO------BECKENBAEUR-----LIZARAZU

NEESKENS----MACKAY----MATTHAUS----TARDELLI

----------------RONALDO----MARADONA----------

Shambolic is the only word for that selection process.

Maldini was described as a "good looking Gary Neville" by the way.

Jesus fuck.

I saw David Lacey did the midfield, and I'd never heard of any of them apart from Matthaus, and even then...

Did he do the whole team?

It's a load of pretentious, attention-grabbing shite.

You've never heard of Johann Neeskens, Marco Tardelli or Dave Mackay?

What age are you Squiggs? Serious question, I'm not being cheeky.

No Maldini?
No Roberto Carlos?
No Peter Schmeichal?
No Mihijlovic?
No Boban?
No Pele?
No Zidane?
No Baggio?

What a disgrace

Roberto Carlos was a fucking shit defender.

And Mihajlovic? Sinisa Mihajlovic? Get real.

Baggio, Carlos,Mihijlovic?

fuck off.

They shouldn't be anywhere near the greatest team of all time!

As it's so hilarious that Carlos' name should even be mentioned, I'm curious... top 5 LBs of all time?

i'd say so. Only because i can name very few quality left backs

thats a lack in my knowledge, not a criticism on left backs btw

Lizarazu in that team tho? Weird

Off the top of my head:

Facchetti
Maldini
Brehme
Lizarazu
Breitner

of course brehme! Forgot about him

Roberto Carlos was great to watch but IMO not in the same league as Maldini or Lizarazu in the modern era and I would seriously consider placing Denis Irwin ahead of him too.

i never knew lizarazu was held in such high esteem. I thought he was very good, but i thought he wouldn't be near the top of peoples lists (again, based on my own ignorance)

That French defence of the 90's...........

Thuram-----Desailly-----Blanc-----Lizarazu

....was virtually impregnable.

Was Tardelli that good? Better than Best? Giggs?

And I always liked Cafu but the best of all time?
I'd say Cafu was the best right back in my lifetime (or since I started watching football in 1971-ish). I would imagine Carlos Alberto would be a popular choice amongst people older than me.

This strikes me as one of those deliberate attempts to come off as contrarian and controversial. No Zidane is utterly ridiculous.

true enough, although i considered the other 3 to be the talent and lizarazu the player who played there as they had no other decent left backs

not to say he wasn't a good player, but i considered him not to be as good as the others

Schmeichel

Cafu-----Baresi-----Hansen----Maldini

---Garrincha---Di Stefano---Platini

---------Maradona----Cruyff------

----------------Ronaldo (fat)---------

Subs: Pele, Van Basten, Souness, Zidane, Mattheus, Dalglish, Beckenbauer.

The first 11 doesn't have much steel to it but with such attacking intent I doubt the opposition would have much possession anyway.

how is pele not gettng into an all-time best XI? i thought he was meant to be the best player ever?
racists peter......thats why

bloody honky racists

No line-up of this kind without George Best in it makes any sense. THE best player I've ever seen or expect to see, and I saw Pele live too.

Good defense, but that line-up would be ripped to shreds, especially on the right flank.

Lev Yashin before Schmeichel too.

Good player. Also, what a cool name, Bixente Lizarazu. It's the name we all wish we had.

Pesam, I was going to say the same about Irwin. Better defender, better going forward and better with set piece's than Carlos. He was very underrated.
