Exclusive: Fergie attempts to bury hatchet with Rafa - FACT!

Sir Alex Ferguson has tried to make his peace with Rafa Benitez before Sunday's Premier League showdown between Manchester United and Liverpool.

The pair have been enemies ever since Benitez accused Fergie of receiving favourable treatment from officials in the Liverpool boss's infamous 'facts' outburst.

And Fergie accused Rafael Benitez of "arrogance" and showing "contempt" to fellow Premier League managers with his touchline conduct and barbed comments.

But in his programme notes ahead of Sunday's lunchtime showdown at Old Trafford, Fergie offered an olive branch by revealing his "sympathy" for under-fire Anfield boss Benitez.

Fergie cited the huge pressure and expectation on Benitez at Liverpool as unfair but said the tremendous demands on managers were a cold reality of the modern game.

Although Fergie has had his fall-outs with Benitez, the United boss spoke of his huge respect for his rival and hailed Liverpool as a big club with a great history.

Benitez is under huge pressure after a dismal season in which Liverpool have failed to sustain a title challenge and made early exits from the Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup.

Liverpool winger Albert Rieira has called the club a "sinking ship" under Benitez, amid claims star players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard could quit at the end of the season.

But rather than gloating at the demise of United's rivals, Fergie said he empathised with Benitez, having been through a similar situation in his early years at Old Trafford.

The United boss pointed out that he "had been there" in reference to his early struggle at United and repeated his belief that sacking a manager was no guarantee of success.

You know when Fergie is being nice to you he doesn't consider you a threat.
Olive branch my arse.

Exactly right; if he's nice to you its because you're a shit manager and no threat.
Well certainly the 'no threat' aspect, sadly

One and the same thing to Horsefucker.

From listening to Fergie over the years, I get a distinct impression that he does like Liverpool as a club. In pre-season he has sometimes tipped us to be his main rivals, before we have gone on to prove him badly mistaken. :🙂

Dunno, Portly. He's said that he learned a lot on Shanks, but he's also had us in his sights from the beginning, and he hasn't tipped us that often. I'm sure he admires our record and traditions but I suspect that's as far as it goes.

You're no wrong. He's spoken many times of his respect for Paisley & Shanks, & spoke at a Paisley function alongside his relatives at Anfield a couple of years back quite eloquently. The reason he wants to surpass us is he held the utmost respect for our achievements.

Still a cunt though, just a cunt with grounding & some intelligence.

Cant wait until he drops dead. Hopefully on the touchline after his team concede a controversial late goal in a key league game on the run in.

The old git's been flapping his gums this evening about Stevie G's V-sign to the ref a couple of games ago and the way he flattened Michael Brown against Portsmouth, saying he didn't expect further action to follow and the FA's disciplinary regime isn't good enough.

Actually he's right about the last bit, 'coz they'll do f'ck all about this like they always do with him.

The FA should bring in a rule whereby there MUST be a ridiculous decision against salford every game, yet fergie must not know about this rule. Then at least when they're winning stuff I'd get some amusement watching him explode every week until nessie's dream comes true.

We will never win the league (under rafa) untill he retires.
Rafa won't retire for fucking ages though.

Neither does it look likely that AF will retire any time soon.
