7 players we have after sending Wisdom out on loan.

Lovren
Skrtel
Sakho
Agger
Kolo
Coates
Ilori

Who do you want to keep and why?

My thinking is:

Agger - sell to highest bidder
Coates - loan to Serie A or La Liga. If Paletta can make it, then sure the hell can Coates. There's a decent player in him, and if he has a decent season, we'll easily recoup about 5-6 million.

Keep the rest.

Start Lovren-Skrtel.

Sakho and Ilori as back-up.

Kolo as official club jester and insurance for injuries.

I'd also look to giving Ilori games at RB, rather than sign Manquillo. Kid needs to play.

Sakho has done nothing yet for me to get the nod ahead of Skrtel.

For large parts of the season, Skrtel was excellent. He starts with Lovren for me. It also keeps the balance - Lovren's always played as a LCB - both at Lyon and Southampton, and Skrtel's always been a RCB.

Lovren - 1st choice CB
Skrtel - competing for CB spot alongside Lovren
Sakho - competing for CB spot alongside Lovren (I'd start the season with him)
Agger - He'll likely be sold for 10m
Kolo - free transfer to Turkey mooted. I can't see Rodgers keeping him at Anfield on high wages given he's not going to inspire confidence as a back-up
Coates - 2 years left on his contract. If he's loaned he'll move for a low fee next summer. I'd be tempted to keep him at the club if Rodgers still sees potential in him and see if he can play well in his likely 10-15 games. We could always loan him out in January.
Ilori - He needs games. Either keep him here as 4th choice (play cup games and some league games) CB and RB cover or give him another season on loan in the premier league (or championship at worst).

Sakho hasn't even played 20 games for us yet, he needs a proper shot at it at some point, i really like Skrtel and it would be harsh on him after his good season but we need to try other things, remember its not always about the individual with the center backs but how they work as a pair, Skrtel and Sakho didn't seem to work even though they both often had decent games, some games you couldn't really criticise them even after we had leaked goals, this is why those damn full back (and goalie) positions of ours get my attention more.

Lovren is right footed, he is very good with both feet, presume that's why has been put on the left side often with his other clubs?

I think we'll start with 3 at the back.

Lovren Skttles Skrtel

Whatever happens you don't spunk 37m pound on 2 cb's and not play them when they are fit.

We won't start with three at the back, we're too top heavy when it comes to using a front three (and yeah, I know we're short of a striker). You're essentially taking a player away from either midfield or attack, the two areas we've invested the most heavily in.

Sell Agger & release the Kolo. Loan Ilori but with an option to get him back if we have an injury crisis. 4 CB's this season Lovren, Coates, Sakho & Skrtel........................Lovren & Skrtel 1st choice to start with.

Rodgers is a 433 man - not too rigid that he won't make tactical changes if need be - but he'll stick to his preferred system.

Coates & Illori should go on loan - they need games.

That leaves 4 good CB's & Toure as cover - which is fine.

Agger & Sakho can battle for the left side - Lovern & Skrtel for the right.

I couldn't give a flying fuck how much we spent in each of them - whoever wants it more & plays better will get a start.

In saying that, I suppose Lovern, due to bring able to play on the left, should be the mainstay and it's up to whoever else to get in to partner him.

Agger & Lovern would be workable as well.

Agger is as near as gone I'd say. Coates - sell. Kolo - sell. Kelly - sell.

Now we are left with the Ilori connundrum. If we adhere to Carra's thinking then we only need 3 CBs plus a utility player who can also play CB as he thinks young CBs won't get time at a big club and should be loaned out.

I'd like to keep him as #4 but I hear Carra's words ringing in my ears.

Lovren & Sakho to start.

I don't see the point of the Illori purchase now unless we are simply hoping to make some money on him somehow.

We've made two massive signings at the back over these last two summers to complement a couple existing senior defenders. He has no real route through to the first team (the odd cup game doesn't count).

Hopefully we get him a good loan and he stays fit this year.

Coates and Kelly need to go and revive their careers somewhere.

Id rather Agger stayed than Toure but I guess that's unlikely.

Coates has been getting more time in the pre-season than Ilori, even though he went to the World Cup. I'm not sure whether that's Rodgers giving him a proper chance, or playing him for the scouts ahead of a sale. He's done well enough, and at this point, I'm leaning towards thinking that he should be ahead of Toure as the 4th CB (mentioned this before - one is likely/going to improve while the other is on the last legs of his league career). Ilori probably goes out on loan so he can get the major minutes required for development, in preparation for a role as Skrtel's replacement in a season or two (if Skrtel's contract isn't extended).

I seen Illori linked with another loan move to Spain for next season yesterday.
I can't remember which team as my brain is fried after a night shift.

Lovren can easily play on the right. No problem. Did so for Croatia, Lyon and Soton though he played mostly on the left.
Lovren - Sakho is the future for me.

Maybe Skrtel will start if Sakhos fitness isnt 100%

Why not?

We've been linked with 3 attacking left sided full backs/wing backs.

Johnson can play as a wing back and Sterling has shown promise there.

We are most overloaded in the CB department.

Perhaps something like this

-----------------------------------Ming-------------------------------------

---------Skrtel-----------------Lovern--------------Sahko---------------

Sterling-----------------------------------------------------------Enrique

---------------Henderson-----Gerrard----------Can--------------------

---------------------Countinho---------Markovic-----------------------

----------------------------------Studge-------------------------------------
