The 6 Nations

It wasn't a day for world beaters, it was a day for for pragmatism. England's selection of Goode at fullback was a good example of it. His tactical kicking was excellent, ours was largely poor.

The sensible approach won out, we tried to many off the top lineouts etc and paid the price with numerous mistakes.

Yeah, every time the kicking tennis started we came out big losers. Goode's kicking was indeed excellent. The defensive line was just a bastard to breach today too. Other than O'Brien and O'Mahony, we didn't have much penetrative ball-carrying. Heaslip, as mentioned during the game, just doesn't have that explosive ball-carrying game anymore, and frankly, isn't justifying his place. As many suspected, making him captain was fucking daft and means he won't be changed for the rest of the championship.

I think I've been saying it for 18 months now too, I just don't see the fuss with Heaslip these days. Henry is worth a spot ahead of him, and I can't wait for Ferris to return.

Other than him there's not a whole lot to change about this team - the approach was wrong on Sunday but the personnel was 90% fine. I kinda knew we had blown it when we had no points on the board at halftime. It was a day for getting ahead, holding on and capitalising on mistakes when the opposition makes mistakes while chasing the game.

Healey cited then. That's a big loss. As for the team Rosco, I think it is mainly right but D'Arcy doesn't offer enough at centre anymore; we also need to bring Marshall into the reckoning at scrum half – he's a cleverer and more attacking player than any of the other option IMHO. I also don't think Gilroy is ready for this level yet. His kicking has been very poor, and whilst in an open attacking game with lots of ball-carrying he can be devastating, he just isn't ready. He's generally a reserve starter for Ulster behind Trimble (usually coming on a bout 60 minutes), and I think Ireland should follow suit. As you say, Ferris can't come back quick enough either. We'd be much stronger with him.

Speaking of Trimble, a friend of mine lives in Paris and seen him on a flight from Paris to Belfast. Holidays or is he being tapped up?

Hmmmm, wouldn't be a huge surprise. There are a lot of euros being waved around in France at the minute.

Ireland: R Kearney; C Gilroy, B O'Driscoll, L Marshall, K Earls; P Jackson, C Murray; T Court, R Best, M Ross; D O'Callaghan, D Ryan; P O'Mahony, S O'Brien, J Heaslip.
Replacements: S Cronin, D Kilcoyne, D Fitzpatrick, D Toner, I Henderson, E Reddan, R O'Gara, L Fitzgerald.

Jackson has got bags of talent but I'm not sure he's ready for a starting role in the 6 nations just yet.

I agree with Athens. He's going to be a really great player, and he can have faultless games, but even at Ulster level there are still games where the occasion gets to him. He's a great passer and kicker and has that inventive spark you want from a 10, but it certainly isn't ideal sticking him in now. The Ulster scrumhalf Marshall, on the other hand, is begging to get picked.

Saying all that, ROG looks done, so what the hell!

His performance last year against Leinster in the final was a classic example.

Not bad until she opens her gob and starts leaving out the letter "t" in that terrible, false semi-Cockney way which so many media people put on.

The French have been terrible. I heard after the second match you could get good odds on them getting the wooden spoon. I should have made that bet!

I'm not sure I agree. Their front row defo got the upper hand over ours and Fofana was the most talented footballer on view. If they could find a good fly-half it would really help them.

I don't know what's worse - the sound of 100 Welshmen singing Land of my Father repeatedly all fucking night - or getting home at 7.30am to find that those pricks in their F1 cars are already ripping around Albert Park.

Fair play, mate, you got what you deserved today. So did we, more's the pity.

It looked like the big game factor got to a lot of your youngsters yesterday mate.

For once i don't feel the need to gloat, the result/performance speaks for itself 😉

The vast majority of the Lions squad has to be coming from England and Wales going on the 6 nations.

You'd think so, though that experience factor may make a difference here and there.

Incidentally there might be one or two more Jockoes than I'd have expected at the start of the tournament.

Visser and Hogg look to be on the plane and i guess Gray will be as well if his injury isn't that bad. Maybe Hines and Beattie?

I'm not sure what the injury situation is like with a few of the Irish, but we might not be seeing too many of their lads on the trip either.

Injured: Bowe, Ferris and Sexton

Deffo going: O'Brien, Healey, BOD and Best

Maybe: Kearney and Heaslip

Kearney's a Probable IMO but I'm thinking Heaslip might be lucky to make the trip.

You need warriors out there, so I reckon all those Scots (and one Dutchman!) you name are in with a chance. Another one (himself with a German dad, hence the unScottish surname) is Strokosch, not the most talented footballer, but a junkyard dog of the kind they'll need.

All i saw at the weekend was Sergio Parisse. You cannot look past the guy. Utter class

What a man. Its almost a shame he's not playing for the Argies but then I suppose the six nations would lose him

Deans has apparently left Quade Cooper out of the Australia training squad preparing for the Lions tour.

Any views?

Cooper and Deans hate each other and Cooper slagged him off in the press. So, no massive surprise really. O'Connor (centre/wing) or Beale (full back) will play 10 and they aren't really stand offs, such is their lack of strength in depth.
Plus, Cooper is looking for a move to the NRL (as is Beale by the way, but he's doing it on the QT).

On the rugby club they do a Lions slot and go over to their aussie counterparts for a 5 min section (Tim Horan and Brendan Cannon etc etc). They still seemed to think that he'll be nailed on to be in the squad to face the Lions.
