The last 16 Dutch Cup tie between Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkmaar was abandoned on Wednesday after Alkmaar's goalkeeper Esteban was sent off for kicking a fan who had run on to the pitch.

Costa Rican Esteban appeared to retaliate against the fan after being kicked himself.

After he was dismissed Alkmaar coach Gert Jan Verbeek ordered his team to leave the pitch
and the match was called off with Ajax leading 1-0.

"Verbeek ordered the team off the pitch to control the situation and in the dressing room our players said that they don't feel safe anymore on the pitch," said Alkmaar's technical director Earnest Stewart.

Ajax official Jeroep Slop said that the police arrested a 19-year-old man.

"I saw that Esteban was attacked and that he defended himself," said Ajax coach Frank de Boer.

"Don't know how I would have reacted but I can understand Esteban with his South American temper.
(What's with this perception with South Americans?)

"I understand the decision of Alkmaar because of all the emotion at that moment."

Alkmaar director Toon Gebrands said that the club would respect any decision taken by the disciplinary board of the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) but that the safety of his players was at stake.

Totally agree with the AZ coach. It's a matter for the police to decide if he assaulted someone, it wasn't a red card offence.

Sorry but I don't think the ref had a choice. This wasn't self-defence, it was retaliation, like when Carra threw that coin back into the crowd once. IMO it shouldn't be a red card offence, but I don't think there's any doubt that it is under the current rules.

I think that's disgusting behaviour from the keeper.

Ref was spot on.

The rule should be changed to only being a Red Card involving players on the pitch.

As far as I know a 'beach ball' or a 'piece of paper' is considered not part of the game so a ball can defelct off it = hard shit

So an encroaching 'fan' should be treated exactly the same?

The goalkeeper should've kicked his teeth in. What if that cunt had a knife?
The ref is a cunt as well.

So if I understand this correctly I can run onto the pitch during a Man U - LFC game, punch Degea on the face and get him sent off?

If he comes after you and thumps you back, he'll get dealt with as he would if you were a member of the opposition. You can't have different rules for different types of retaliation.

There was another player sent off for tackling a fan earlier this year. Can't remember where, think it was in England or Scandinavia somewhere.

"Don't know how I would have reacted but I can understand Esteban with his South American temper.

Racist! Ban him!

Just seen it on tv.. Jeez the goalie was giving it some against the fan, I'm sure the Dutch FA will throw the book at him

Red card rescinded. Logic at work.

The Ajax fan who charged AZ's keeper Esteban Alvarado during last Wednesday's Dutch Cup tie has been given a 30-year stadium ban.

The 19-year-old youth had already been banned from the Ajax ground for an earlier incident but got a ticket for the match from a friend.

According to the Telegraaf, Ajax is holding both the youth and the friend who supplied the ticket liable for any damages caused by the incident. The youth was remanded in custody for 14 days on Saturday.

The Dutch football association has not yet decided if the match should be replayed or restarted.

The attack led to AZ's keeper Esteban being given a red card after kicking his would-be attacker as he lay on the ground. Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek then ordered his team to walk out in protest. Ajax was 1-0 ahead. The red card has since been withdrawn.

"The keeper was attacked unexpectedly and therefore the prosecutor judged that his mood caused his response against his attacker," the KNVB said in a statement on its website.

Esteban defended his actions, telling reporters in Costa Rica: "I was very scared. The first thing I thought was that he had a knife. I thought only to defend myself. I was afraid he might be armed.

"To anyone who thinks I was overly aggressive, I invite them to experience what I experienced and then judge.
I have children, brothers, a father and mother and I don't know if the person coming towards me is going to give me a kiss or cut me in half.

"I am not proud of what I did but I just did what anyone else would do
but these people must learn they cannot get away with it.''

Esteban revealed he had received messages of support from Ajax, but believes the Amsterdam club were not to blame.

"Frank de Boer has apologised as have a few of the players but I told them they did not have to be ashamed of an idiot,'' he said.
