Team for Villa

Rotation time? We've got a very short period for recuperation from the Wolves match, but then Villa have one day less - and are less likely to rotate.

I think it's inevitable that Kuyt will be picked. Assuming Riera is fit, I'd also like to see him start, as Yossi is wasted on the left and probably tired from the last match, so may make more impact as a sub. Riera will also make us more solid defensively on the left.

Here's my team. I generally prefer Aurelio to Insua at LB, but the latter played very well against Wolves so it would seem perverse to drop him now.

Reina

Magic - Carra - Agger - Insua

Lucas - Aquilani

Kuyt - Gerrard - Riera

Torres

Move Gerrard into CM, drop Lucas, play Aurelio at LB and Casper behind Torres

Kuyt on the right, Riera on the left

that would still leave too much rubbish in the team. riera is an average to poor player who's barely kicked a ball this season. if you're going to have him it makes more sense to just replace him with ngog. they are both average so what difference does it make? but then at least with ngog he has a chance of scoring. just purely on probability, it would be in our favour to opt for 433 if we want to win the game.

I suppose I'm working to some kind of law of averages, which would suggest Riera won't play like a total spaz in every single game

It's pretty futile and pathetic, I know, but I don't have much else to go on

I read somewhere today that it is likely both Torres & Aquilani are unlikely to start due to the lack of time for recuperation from their exertions on Sunday. Torres because he is not yet fully recovered from his injuries and Aquaman because he is not yet fully fit. I hope that's BS.

I'd say that's quite likely. Hopefully that will mean Gerrard will move back to CM, and Benny will replace him in the hole.

Sounds all too plausible. In which case...

Reina

Magic - Carra - Agger - Insua

Lucas - Gerrard

Kuyt - Yossi - Riera

Wash

Not a great team, it has to be said. I can see us doing a lot of defending in this one.

Btw, I don't think there's the faintest chance of us playing a CM of Gerrard and Aquilani away to Villa.

Reina
Carra Skrtel Agger Insua
Johnson Gerrard Lucas Aurelio
Yossi
Kuyt

😱

I'd play:

--------------------Riera-----------------
--Johnson--Carra--Agger--Aurelio--
--Yossi-----Gerrard---Aquilani--Riera--
--------------Kuyt----Torres-------------

Rafa will go:

----------Lucas-----Aquilani--------
----Kuyt-----Gerrard------Riera---
---------------Torres-------------

If Aquilani is available, I'd go for the same team that beat Wolves.

If not, I'd line 'em up like this:

---------------- Reina
Magic ---- Carra -- Agger ---- Insua
Yossi --- Lucas -- Gerrard --- Aurelio
----------- Torres -- Kuyt

Kuyt's an absolute certainty to start.

I was kinda thinking he was rested for this game, however Yossi does deserve to play ahead of him on current form. If Kuyt has to be squeezed into the side somehow, I'd put him on the left.

Zero chance that Lucas won't play, and however good in fantasy land the idea is of dropping Gerrard back to play alongside Aquilani, it'll never happen when neither have the onus to actually sit and defend.

-------------Reina-------------
GlenJo-Carra-Agger-Aurelio
---------Lucas--Gerrard-----
--Kuyt------Yossi-----Riera-
-------------Torres------------

Aquilani looked fucked the other day and I suspect Rafa will be keeping a reign on him and his fitness still (rightly or wrongly). I reckon that'll be the team.

Torres can have a rest (if he needs one), when we play Reading, no?
[/quote]

Yep.. I reckon he'll play tomorrow.

Same here.

Oh how we could do with a couple of goals from Fernando tomorrow!

Nah, Torres needs to start tomorrow. He can come off after 80 mins when were 2 up.

No Brendan. I think you are working on a way to get Lucas out of the team, and whilst I agree with you, I dont think we can do it when Mascher is out.

Incidentally the offal says that Riera will not figure against Villa. Also it has not updated Kelly's situation since 1st December. Either the site is useless as a scource of information, or its time to start worrying about the extent of Martin's "minor" injury

Don't really disagree with the lineup Bunny but I'll be stunned beyond words if Aquilani starts after playing so long against Wolves. He'll be on the bench IMO, Lucas will be in the centre with, I fear, Spearing. I think Aurelio will be on the left of midfield with Kuyt on the right. Gerrard will be his seemingly fixed position and, I suspect Ngog will be up front while Torres has a break.

That will mean that Gerrard will be isolated in a way rarely seen; almost no creativity happening behind him and very little to work with in front of him.

If that happens and we play with a midfield of Auerlio-Spearing-Lucas-Kuyt.. really, we may as well not turn up. That's 2 defensive midfielders, 1 defender, and 1 defensive forward.. to surmise - an awful midfield.

That's probably true but it's based on two main points:

1) I can't, for the life of me, see Rafa moving Gerrard into midfield at this point. Can you?

2) I can't imagine Rafa playing Aquilani twice in quick succession after being out for so long. Can you?

About the only real change I can see is if Riera or Yossi are played on the left instead of Aurelio.
