Javier Mascherano returns from injury to boost Liverpool for Champions League Richard Hillary
Javier Mascherano has been included in the Liverpool squad for tomorrow's opening Champions League clash with the Hungarian champions, Debrecen, at Anfield.
The Argentina midfielder missed the 4-0 win over Burnley after picking up a pelvic injury while on World Cup duty with Argentina, and he did not return from South America until Sunday following tests.
Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, has warned his team against complacency against the little-known Hungarian side and stressed the importance of making a strong start to the competition.
“We are the favourites on the pitch …clearly we have confidence we can do it,†he said. “Our experience is that if you don't start well you have to work harder afterwards. So we want to do our job from the first game.
“They [Debrecen] have won eight games in a row and are doing well. they have players with pace and ability.â€
Lucas Leiva, the Brazilian midfielder, echoed his manager’s thoughts and warned Debrecen could not be underestimated.
“If they are playing in the Champions League they will have some qualityâ€, he said. “They will know more about us than we know about them which makes it dangerous. We know how our supporters feel about watching the team in these matches – it is very special, and we want to get close to the final again.â€
Lucas has been the subject of widespread criticism again this season, with critics and supporters yet to be convinced of his ability. However, Benitez once again defended his midfielder.
"He's playing more games - five in a row which is good for him and his confidence,†Benitez added. “The fans have realised he is someone who tries his best for the club, that's the most important thing."
