Do we need to freshen it up, with the West Ham game coming up on the Saturday, or should we stick with the same team?

I'd be tempted to use the same XI again, with Aurelio perhaps coming in for Insua, as the slower pace of the CL will make it easier for him to get back up to speed.

Mascher could be in contention, but apparently he's only getting back from South America today, and he's had some kind of injury, so it might be a bit soon for him. And I'd definitely pick Mascher against the Hammers because I think he'll have a point to prove.

So...

Reina

Johnson - Carra - Skrtel - Aurelio

Lucas - Gerrard

Kuyt - Yossi - Riera

Torres

I'd be tempted to mix things up a bit and rest Gerrard and Torres for this one.

Maybe a 4-4-2 with Kuyt and N'Gog up front, Riera and Yossi out wide. Lucas and Mascher in the middle.

Agreed. I guess it could be risky, though this should be our easiest of the 6 games.

Yep. Have them on the bench and bring them on if things are tight.
Off topic slightly, but I was happy Johnson only played for an hour yesterday.

Wrong approach, I think. We are just starting to tick and need to keep pushing on. If we were to struggle to get a result in this game, it would just mount the pressure on later Champions League game. We should try to get good wins early in the Champions League and take the pressure off the later.

And, we still need to improve our game. So I would play a very strong team that has to include Gerrard and Torres - who are not yet clicking together this season.

We can mix it up a little bit, but I'd rather the key players started from the off. We looked very good in spells against Burnley, so it'd be nice to keep the momentum going as well as avoid having to chase the game to avoid an upset if the squaddies prove yet again that they're not up to the job when played as a collective.

I'd like to see Torres start.

He was itching for a goal against Burnley but by and large, they handled him extremely well.

Yeah, I'd prefer to see Torres start, he looks like he needs a goal or two.

Given the choice, starting key players then resting them when we're comfortable is better IMO.

Same team please.

Allthough i wouldn't be against seeing Mascher or Aurelio start (they don't weaken the team).

Gerrard can get a rest when Aquilani is back in the mix.

If Torres has to be protected then hopefully Babel gets a run out.

I agree with all of that, Froggy.

Apart from when he couldn't be arsed running onto what would have been a tap in from an Insua cross

Same team, win the game in the first half then give rest to those that need it for the West Ham game.

Keep the winning momentum like what FreshRed said.

I'd say this is a good opportunity to rest some players. My team:

Reina

Kelly Carragher Kirgiakos Aurelio

Mashcerano Lucas

Gerrard
Benayoun Babel
Torres

Good call Modokay, Zorba's a cert for this I reckon. Dont see Kelly getting a start though.
[/quote]

I know, thought I'd make a gamble. Degen might be a better bet but I'd rather play Kelly ahead of him. Johnson should be rested for the West ham game. Gerrard/Torres subbed after 60 min.

Rest Carra? We need to do it this year, we didn't last year and it showed and cost us at the end of the year.

Play the big guns, have the game won by the hour and take them off.

Is correct, and is what he'll do.

Under the circumstances, flirting with not qualifying through the group stages would be unthinkable.

Yep, take our three points and then worry about getting G&T off the field.

At the risk of there not being enough humour in this thread, I declare from this forward on we refer to our opponents as Debenhams, and intersperse this thread and the ensuing 'Matchday' thread with Department Store related puns.
