we all know that lucas should not start this game. he's a passenger at the best of times never mind against chelsea's central midfield.

gerrard an masch for me in the middle with yossi, riera and kuyt playing behind torres.

i would also go with insua as i feel fabio takes a few games to get upto speed.

please rafa drop your love child lucas for this game, playing him against relegation fodder and mid table nobodies is one thing but against chelsea? i saw him on saturday at the hull game, whilst he got better as the game went on he was invisible for large parts of it and will never be of the standard necessary. its one thing being a squad filler but a 1st team regular starter?

no offence but I'd drop mash before lucas. anyone who says that mash is currently having a better season than lucas has an aggenda
Maybe, but Mascher's a big-game player - and we need someone to neutralise Lampard. He will definitely play against Chelsea.

lucas has looked better after we dropped gerrard back to play next to him. masch will look even better if he gets a run alongside gerrard instead of lucas.

I can't talk for anyone else (probably for the best 😉 ) but the reason I would drop yossi is riera will definately keep the ball better (crucial away at a top 4 side) and the side will be more solid through the middle with mash to combat ballack, essien and lampard. if we go with yossi rather than riera almost certainly chelsea will attack us down our left side as yossi will come infield leaving a gap.

lucas has almost been involved in big games which we have won. mash is the better player but lucas is in better form. anyway its moot as I would play them both and drop yossi

Reina

Magic - Carra - Skrtel - Insua/Aurelio

Mascherano - Gerrard

Kuyt - Yossi - Riera

Torres
I'd be very happy indeed to see that team. And I'd play Insua.

it's a bit unbalanced, though.

Johnson-Skrtel-Carra-Insua
----------Masher-Lucas--------
-Kuyt--------Gerrard----Riera
---------------Torres------------

My bet as well. Maybe with Yossi playing on the left.

playing gerrard in midfield with masher will either;

a) nullify gerrard as he will have to help out tracking the likes of ballack, essien and lampard

b) swamp masher as he will have to hold off three midfield players as gerrard goes forwards in support of the striker

you wont see it I can almost guarantee it.

If Mascher doesn't play in this game, then what's the fucking point in having him at all?

I'm stunned some people wouldn't pick him for Chelsea away.

I just review the whole thread, there isn't a single person who has left masher out of their team, who was your post directed at?

Oh, fair enough.

I thought a few people above where hinting at it.
I think it's people either leaving out lucas, yossi or riera as we'll only be able to fit in two of the three. I vote yossi.

Mascher and Yossi are both ruled out of our CL game, i hope they're back ready for Sunday.

Duo ruled out for Reds

Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun have been ruled out of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League clash with Fiorentina.

The midfield pair have not travelled with the rest of the squad to Italy for Tuesday's Group E tie due to illness and injury respectively.

Maschaerano, who made a late appearance off the bench in the weekend win over Hull City, is suffering from sickness, while Benayoun picked up a leg knock in the same game.

Argentine enforcer Mascherano was expected to return to the starting line-up against Fiorentina, but his absence means Steven Gerrard is likely to continue in midfield alongside Lucas Leiva.

Ryan Babel will be hoping to get the nod to replace Benayoun in the starting line-up after his two-goal show as a substitute against Hull.

Return
Meanwhile, Daniel Agger is set to make his return to action for the reserves on Tuesday night.

Agger has been pencilled in to feature in the reserves' clash with Manchester City after recovering from a back injury.

The Danish international has not featured this season after being forced to undergo surgery on the problem and Liverpool reserve team boss John McMahon believes it is an ideal game for the defender to make his return.

"It is fantastic to see Daniel back and it's a great boost for everyone at the club," McMahon told the club's official website.

"It's always great to see quality players come back from injury and this will be a perfect game for him to make his comeback.

"It's a fantastic stadium with a great pitch and it is always a fantastic boost for the young lads when they have a top professional like Daniel playing alongside them.

"The young lads look up to him and they can learn from him as well."

In that case:

Reina

Johnson Carra Skrtel Insua

Lucas Spearing

Kuyt Gerrard Babel

Torres

I can't believe all the posters dropping Yossi for this game. He's been involved in almost all our goals so far this season, and has looked our most consistently dangerous player. I don't care where he plays - LW, no 10 or RW - but he has to start. I would rather drop Kuyt than Yossi.
totally agree, he has been superb and should start

bet carra is looking forward to marking Drogba !!!

i expect he will be fit, big lump ( who is always brilliant against us)

Play a 4-2-3-1 with Lucas and Masher in the middle.

If Insua plays, I'd prefer Riera ahead of him.
