Very VERY interesting.
It'll be Gerrard on the right as you put the team down on paper I'd say, but he doesn't stay there anyway, and Mascher's capable enough behind him to stop anything coming down Atletico's left.
Besides, we have to win, and as others have allluded - we're likely to go at them hardcore-styleee for the first half an hour - which will invariably see Gerrard popping up everywhere.
My concern is Kuyt dropping deep from the striker's role/position. The champ is so motherfucking keen to get involved that he runs himself and the team out of shape. Babel's not the best, but at least he stays up there, keeps the things stretched and holds our shape and structure.
The other massive concern is the shape of that team. Bar Agger, there's not a left-footer in there. Glenjo (if he's at left-back) and Yossi both coming inside from the left narrows things enromously, and if Madrid are in anyway capable defensively they could shut us out.
Aquilani's movement is important. He's got this rather-pleasing ability to drag the opposition's defensive midfielder out of position without actually looking for the ball himself, hence opening up space for Gerrard to come in and exploit, or possibly Lucas to move forward into. Again, the importance of Dirk not dropping into this space and bringing a fucking centre-back with him is key.
An early goal and it's on like donkey kong. I'd say Rafa's spent quite a bit of time working on set-pieces too. Madrid arent the quickest, they'll be defending deep, and we'll be marauding everywhere. Expect sloppy, silly free-kicks to be given away all over the place, and for a free-kick top have been worked on in training similar to Agger's away to Benfica and at home to Chelsea in the CL Semi-Final a couple of years back.
We don't need to be mental in their face, we just need to be smart and move it quick.
