I heard this so called French footy expert on the radio yesterday talking about Taiwo. He was saying that apart from having a good shot the lad is pretty shite.

Then he doesn't sound like much of an expert. Will be interesting to see Taiwo against the Mancs, that will be a good test for him.

He was previewing that game. Stated that Taiwo and some ex Charlton defender (i think) were the 2 weak links.

Seen much of him then mate?

Yeah, a bit actually. Big, strong and pacey. Good cross and one hell of a shot. A bit suspect defensivly, at least he used to be, which is why I'm not to sure on signing him. But Didier Deschamps may have taught him a thing or two.

Will be very interesting to see. If he's sorted out the defensive woes then signing him is a no brainer.

There is not a defender at Liverpool who won't improve having Carra to train and play with.

Taiwo will be a beast for us.

He looked decent enough tonight all right.

And for once it looks like a good thing that we missed out on Fanni.

Yep.

Like JAR towards the end.

Thought he had a good game tbh. Excellent in the air and great cross.

Strong, loads of pace and was pretty good defensivly. Positioning was a bit erratic at times, but overall a good performance.

Is Taiwo that good? I've seen very little of him mind but he's struck me as a little too one footed and slightly clumsy.

Tremoulinas would be my top target for left-back.

Tremoulinas is the better footballer without a doubt, but I do worry that he's a bit lightweight for the PL. He's also very weak in the air, which is a worry for a defender.

Aston VILLA boss Gerard Houllier is eager to win the race for Marseille’s Nigerian international left-back Taye Taiwo.

Houllier wants the powerful Taiwo, 25, and is keen to beat NEWCASTLE to his signature – with a deal close as the French-based defender will become a free agent in the summer.

Taiwo can sign a pre-contract agreement because his talks with Marseille have broken down.

The imposing defender had a solid game against Manchester United in the Champions League last week when he was drafted in to mark Nani.

Taiwo’s arrival would mean out-of-favour Stephen Warnock will be allowed to go for a bargain fee. His wages put off WIGAN when the Latics tried for him in January.

Olympique Marseille defender Taye Taiwo will announce next week he is set to sign for Benfica - snubbing the advances of Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Reports in the Portuguese press claim the 25-year-old Nigerian has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Lisbon side, leaving the Reds and Villa out in the cold.

Juventus were also reportedly interested in the powerful left-back, whose current deal with the Ligue A side was due to end in June.

A dead-ball specialist, the full-back is well-known in the French league for his powerful and accurate long shots, and has over 170 appearances for Marseille.

Taiwo is currently on international duty with Nigeria preparing for their 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Ethiopia.

Coentrao to leave or shifted permanently to left wing?

Not necessarily. Money isn't everything.
[/quote]

True, but Portugal. The Portugeese liga is horrendous.

I'm afraid I don't think we're best placed to say that after the way we went out of Europe. 😉

Besides, things like the weather, the lifestyle and the chance to be a big fish in a smaller pond may well appeal particularly to some players. It isn't a choice I'd make, buit it's one I can understand.

What was Brendan's old argument; There's never been a good African defender ever?

Something like that anyway.

ARSENAL are hot on the trail of Marseille left-back Taye Taiwo – as they prepare for the possible departure of Gael Clichy.

Clichy is refusing to discuss a new deal and there are fears at the Emirates that he aims to run down his contract and leave for nothing in the summer of 2012.

Boss Arsene Wenger is searching for potential replacements and Nigeria international Taiwo, 25, is top of his list.

Taiwo will leave Marseille on a free this summer – and it is believed that Arsenal have made contact with the player.

He is a free-kick specialist with an excellent goals record. Marseille boss Didier Deschamps is resigned to losing him to a club in England or Spain.

Taiwo has also been targeted by Real Madrid chief Jose Mourinho, who has shown interest in Clichy.

Ha! Thats true. Let's hope they hired another doctor than the one who did Cissokhos medical.

Adriano Galliani has confirmed Milan “want to sign Taye Taiwo, even without an EU passport.â€

The Marseille full-back will be out of contract at the end of the season and has long been associated with a free transfer to San Siro.

“We do want to sign Taiwo, even without an EU passport,†Vice-President Galliani told Sky Sport Italia.

The Nigerian defender has had a splendid campaign for Marseille in Ligue 1 and scored the winner in the French Cup Final.

I'd hazard a guess that it won't take too long before he is granted an EU passport.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri claims that deals have been agreed to sign Roma's Philippe Mexes and Marseille's Taye Taiwo.

The new Serie A champions are focusing on attempting to secure a Double as they prepare for the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final against Palermo.

But Milan are also focusing on improving their squad ahead of next season's UEFA Champions League participation and Allegri has stated that transfer activity is taking place.

Roma centre-back Mexes has been a long-term target and Taiwo has also been expected to leave Marseille and Milan appear to have agreed the transfers.

Allegri told a press conference: "We have taken Mexes and Taiwo, so I think we are okay in defence for next season.

"Now we will evaluate for midfield and attack, but today we think about the Coppa Italia semi-finals."

Super Eagles defender, Taye Taiwo has explained why he snubbed the English Premier League in favour of a move to Italian Serie A champions, AC Milan.

Newly crowned Premier League champions Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, as well as Liverpool and Tottenham were on a long list of clubs tracking the Olympique Marseille full-back, whose contract with the French side will expire at the end of June.

Even Atletico Madrid were keen on luring the former Lobi Stars ace to the Spanish La Liga at some point during the last couple of months, but Milan were able to persuade the 26-year-old to shun the advances of the Spanish La Liga and the English Premier League and sign a three-year deal last month.

The news was received with some element of shock in certain sections of the media, especially in Nigeria where the English Premier League has a massive followership, but Taiwo has come out to disclose why he chose the Italian top flight over the English elite division.

“I had some offers from the Premier League but I decided Milan because it is a big club at the same level as Chelsea or Manchester United,†he told Italy’s Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“I always wanted to be on a team with players of this quality and I am totally convinced my style of play will fit better in Italy than in England.â€

Taiwo is also of the opinion that a move to a club with the reputation of Milan is a big step forward in his career.

“In my opinion, they are at the same level as clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea. I am not saying that the other teams that were after my signature are not good teams, though,†he continued.

“It is just that ever since making my international debut for Nigeria, I have dreamt of playing for an absolute top club.

He added: “Milan have superb players like [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, [Clarence] Seedorf and [Alexandre] Pato.â€
