Rafa v Jose as Liverpool Fight for Marseille’s African Powerhouse

Rafa Benitez is reported in the French press to be stepping up his pursuit of Marseille’s powerful left-back Taye Taiwo after Inter Milan showed an interest. Ideally Liverpool would prefer to wait until the summer to sign the powerful Nigerian but with Jose Mourinho ready to pounce, it would seem a deal will be pushed through as soon as Ryan Babel departs from Anfield.

Taiwo issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to the Premier League big four at the end of last season which alerted Liverpool who are in the hunt to add a left-sided defender to the squad following the departure of the disappointing Andrea Dossena. The Reds have had to rely heavily on Argentine youngster Emiliano Insua but ideally Benitez would prefer to introduce him gradually into the side. If Taiwo can be signed, the Nigerian and currently injured right-back Glen Johnson would provide Liverpool with two of the most attacking full-backs in the Premier League.

The player is confident in his ability which was perfectly illustrated by his comments to France-Football, “If I was to depart, then I would not join a small club. It will be Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal.â€

The defender wants to test his ability to play against the very best in the Premier League as Taiwo’s comments illustrate, “I am not scared by the level in England. I believe I have the right level to defend against [Wayne] Rooney.

The 24-year-old Nigerian international has been linked to numerous Premier League clubs in the past year particularly Tottenham and Man City. However, it would seem that Liverpool are now competing with Italian league leaders Inter for the marauding left-back. The player’s agent Franco Jovino has suggested that a move is more likely in the summer than in January but with Marseille 12 points behind league leaders Bordeaux, his club may decide to cash in now.

He said: “He is interesting many clubs but for now nothing is concrete, particularly as regards Inter and the Italian clubs in general.

“The player is especially popular in the Premier League.

“The possibility of moving in January? It’s complicated. More likely in June.â€

Liverpool are the club that would ideally suit the Nigerian from the current big four. Gael Clichy, Patrice Evra and Ashley Cole are all regulars in their respective teams and would take some shifting. Fabio Aurelio is arguably Liverpool’s current first choice left-back although he had been used in midfield of late. Young Argentine Emiliano Insua has shown potential but is also liable to make mistakes and has come in for recent criticism. Alternatively Taiwo would fit perfectly into Liverpool’s style of play and has far more experience.

The left-back has played in France for the last 6 seasons and has made 149 league appearances for the club (11 goals). Marseille finished 16th in the 2007/08 season which led to speculation concerning a number of their players but they managed to retain the Nigerian and it has paid off. The club came 2nd last season just 3 points behind champions Bordeaux with Taiwo playing in 35 of the team’s 38 league games (34 starts). However, with the French title looking out of the club’s reach, the player is likely to leave.

Not only is Taiwo renowned for his no-nonsense defending but also his attacking forays and powerful shooting ability. His long range efforts have been clocked at over 80mph so expect him to fight with Steven Gerrard to take charge of free-kicks if he does sign for Liverpool.

Taiwo was signed by Marseille to replace legendary French full-back Bixente Lizarazu and has become a cult figure for the club. He was part of the Nigerian side that lost to Argentina in the final of the 2005 World Youth Championships. In fact, he was voted 3rd best player in the tournament behind Lionel Messi and Obi Mikel.

The Nigerian international has is a regular in his senior national side scoring 7 goals. He has played in three African Cup of Nations tournaments and is currently in Angola as the Super Eagles have advanced through the group stage which will make negotiations difficult.

I've been advocating this signing for a while. Exactly the type of player we need at left back, if we're to take a step further.

He'd cost around 8 mill £, and be worth every penny.
Still only 24, but loads of experience.

Great pace, strong, good in the air, great tackler, fantastic shot and very good going forward.

Sign please!!

I've never seen this guy play so I'll look out for him in the ACON. The reports sound good and his age and experience makes him the3 indetikit Rafa first team signing. I hope he has pace. We are sorely lacking pace in our team, it's holding us back. Probably just another rumour though.

Me either. But I'm taking a scientific approach, in that the laws of probability mean he is unlikely to be any worse than Insua

I wanted one in the summer but it's promising now at least that Rafa has identified LB as a priority.

Haven't seen this guy play. He sounds a like a big, black Riise, which is good enough for me. Cool name, too.

Watching him play for my national side, he's a slightly quicker, far lazier version of Riise. He also has a shoot on sight policy which can be very frustrating. Not great, but better than Insua? For sure.

Encouraging, thanks.

Two things, mate:

Can he defend?
Is he a total bellend?

West africans are physically excellent according to vialli/marcotti's book.

Apprently this isn't racist as it's a compliment.

i love that leap of logic.

That would also include Carribeans and African Americans so anecdotally it could be true, though I like these things backed up by science or else it is generalisation which is prejudicial by nature and thus racist. Though It's just my opinion and I've probably been wooshed.'

Can he defend? Could Riise? To be honest, I don't rate any of our Nigerian defenders much save Yobo. It's probably more of team ethic thing than any individual though. Like most African full backs, he uses his pace and power to bail him out.. and he's twice as quick going forward than coming back.

He has a good powerful bullet shot on him (Carlos/Riise-like). But unfortunately, his accuracy is very Riise-like too. Whilst i'd be happy his signing could mean we wouldn't have to see Insua much more, I'm not sure he's solid enough for us to have at LB, especially with Johnson on the right. In fact, his defending is very Johnson-like. i.e. not great.

As for the bellend bit.. not sure what you mean.. he's not detestable, but again, I've mainly watched him for my country so obviously I've got a natural bias there.

He just sounds a bit cocky, not that I mind that, but sometimes these players provoke unrest. Agree about Insua, he needs shunting back to the bench.

I'm imagining if Riise and Micah Richards had a baby, we'd have a little Taiwo.

It may well be true, yet if it is roles reversed, ie, physically inferior, you aren't allowed to say it.

You can say what you like if it's backed up by science.

I know he def played in the 4-0 and 2-1 games against Marseille away. But I don't think I watched either of the home legs against them so not sure.

My step-Dad is Irish. (name)

I'm English and Nigerian.

Though I support all 3 teams except when they're playing each other.

Get your pound back mate, and put it on the lottery. You'll have better odds there. Honestly we won't make it past the group stages. If there's an African team to back, it'll be the Ivory Coast despite their very diffucult group.
