Worth starting a thread about how Klopp has rotated the two of them so well at right back.
Aside from the occasional Gomez brain switch off I think both have been excellent and grown as the season has gone on.

Thoughts on where people think the two lads will end up playing long term in an Lfc side and if they are good enough to be regular starters for the team moving forward?

Gomez will be centre back, but maybe not first choice (I like him too), and Trent will be a starting midfielder

I'd agree with that. I think Gomez is a CB all day long, and next season he'll either be playing there or challenging for it. I still don't quite know where Trent will end up, except I don't think it'll be in defence. He's going to bulk up a bit and become a more muscular sort of player, and I can see him evolving like Gerrard did, as promising on the right as in the centre, but he's surely got to exploit his attacking skills.

Trent now has 3 goals in 11 starts in all competitions this season – almost 1 in 3. He has already more goals this season than Clyne in his 2 years of playing for Liverpool. Moreno – an attacking fullback with a powerful shot – has taken 129 games for Liverpool to score 3 goals. All of this is to say, I'm more and more confident that Trent will end up playing further up than he is now; he will never be a great defender, but he can be a great player.

I'm quite happy to keep Gomez at RB for the time being; I think he still lacks a bit of awareness to play at CB in big games as the mistake vs Arsenal showed, but he is very tough to beat 1 on 1 and decent going forward. When Clyne comes back Klopp will have a "good" kind of dilemma.

Must say that I was very pleased when I heard that TAA scored.
The boy has it. Fearless.
Definitely the next local kid who's gonna make it.

Gomez is the arguably more defensive one, yet seems to have made more mistakes. Maybe because he's asked to do more as a covering defender, as opposed to TAA who utilizes his pace and skill better in tight situations to come away with the ball, but also gets more cover from a midfielder and is asked to do less defensively.

They've both done exceptionally well this season and are real assets to the club, massive kudos to Klopp. With Clyne struggling last season to really make an impact as an attacking fullback, it's been a bit of a revelation that we've developed these two.

I don't think TAA has had nearly 2 years in the sidelines though. Easy to forget that Gomez is playing regularly for the first time in a long while.

Zero dilemma, Clyne starts when fit

Be boss if TAA becomes the player it looks like he might. It's much better for everyone if you've got a world class scouser in the middle with the captain's armband on.
That would of be ideal but really to have a local anywhere on the pitch would be fantastic for the team, the fans and the academy

Let's be honest, TAA is playing all the "easy" games where we dominate the ball and attacking 90% of the game. The one tough game TAA had (City away), he didn't look so good defensively.

Gomez is playing the tougher games, against the likes of Hazard, Martial and Sanchez (and has had less rest), so it's easy to see why he's made more mistakes.

Are you praising Klopp there Mark? Jeeezz

Yep can picked up a knock but Lallana looked lively if not a little selfish in the final 3rd.

Great to have him back
So Wijnaldum, Lallana and Milner in midfield or two of them plus Coutinho?
I think it's time to unleash the TAA. Play him in midfield.

Gini Milner and Coutinho I'd imagine.

I don't see TAA in there before Clyne returns unless we have a crisis.

Big difference between looking excellent as an attacking full back with little no defensive responsibility where you are the last person the opposition will pick up and playing in CM.

It's a whole different ball game and I'm not sure he's ready yet,

Well he's got to learn someday and it's not entirely new to him. It's his natural position. He was moved right back in order to help him develop other parts of his game.
Of course, I do understand that he's playing against the big boys now.
Throw him in the deep end, I say.

Yup. Much as I rate TAA (think he’s looking amazing at only 19), he would be in trouble with the silky/skillful attackers that the big boys have.
And I really like how Klopp’s managing that. Gomez is still young but more mature. So Klopp’s throwing him into the deep end with hope that he’ll learn from his mistakes. With TAA, it’s all about building up his confidence. Loving it.

Clyne at his prime, no doubt. The Clyne we saw last season .. I'm not so sure. Maybe in matches where we expect to be under pressure, but we would lose attacking impetus no matter who he replaced because both Gomez and TAA are better in attack. Happy with all three though.

CM was Carra's natural position when he broke into the team.

Doesn't always translate

It wasn't really his natural position. We tried to protect him for years before his eventual and obvious transition to centre half. We basically put him in defensive areas of the team that weren't quite as demanding as centre half, so he could learn the game and develop, without the pressure that goes with being a young central defender and the inevitable mistakes that go with it.

It worked really. But the Carragher/TAA comparison doesn't really fit, the Gerrard one does because both are versatile and have shown alot more from that position in terms of attacking intelligence and being able to support the midfield and attack. While still having "some" defensive capabilities to not seem too much of a liability when called upon in more defensive roles/situations.

I think Gomez is growing into a superb defender. And the experiences (Sanchez/Lanzini mistakes) will only make him better.

For me, he's a bit like Chelsea's Azpilicueta, in that he's not quite a FB and not quite a CB, and is probably best suited in a back 3, as he's comfortable enough on the ball to play out, but also good enough defensively to defend both wide and central areas. It's no surprise he played so well against Neymar in that position for England.

Possibly. On a somewhat related topic, Bonucci has just been heavily criticized by Fabio Capello, who said that he simply “cannot play in the back 4, only in the 3.” I have to say I’m seeing it more and more that a lot of defenders look better in the back 3, but only some can really handle back 4. I think as attacking football becomes more and more deadly across the continent, there will be less and less central defenders capable of holding their own with just one partner.

Apart from his debut Gerrard played in midfield from then on though so I don't think those comparisons are doing him any favors either.
