I'm working across an office from a guy in his 50s who professes to support Arsenal. He grew up in London and went to games as a young kid etc. Anyway, we were discussing Man Citeh v Barca tonight with someone who is a Citeh fan and we get to talking about the title and I said Citeh is better than Chelski winning it and he pipes up with "Well, if Arsenal can't win then the next best thing is Chelsea winning it. Any London team winning it is ok by me." He even said he would rather see Spurs win it than anyone outside London.

I honestly didn't know what to do and just about managed to keep the peace. By which I mean I just managed to stop short of calling him a massive twat.

Then he proceeded to give me shit for never winning anything. Until I reminded him we had won the European Cup five times and his team had never won it. "Yes, but we get in it every year, unlike you" came his reply.
I didn't bother reminding him of the thrashing we gave them last season and the fact we finished above them. What's the point?
I despair.

we will get them in the Semi Final and twat em.. you will have the last laugh.. that being said you want to remind him its all very well being in the champions league every season, but when have they ever played to win the thing ?

One of the partners where I used to work was like that. He was a Utd fan but always supported any team from the north west ahead of anyone else. He even wanted Liverpool to win the 2006 cup final.

It's almost like these people need to be sat down and have a powerpoint presentation to explain just how utterly fucked up this kind of thinking is.

He seemed to think his was the normal position. Whenever he met any Liverpool fan who told him, say, they wanted Utd out of Europe (being every LFC fan he ever met), he'd just sort of shake his head sadly and murmur 'I just can't understand that kind of attitude'. It was more sorrowful than anything else.

The entire concept of a local derby just seemed to have passed him by.

I work with a guy who is a Chelsea fan but says that Liverpool are his second team and he will support them as long as it doesn't impact Chelsea.
He may think he is but he ain't a football supporter in my book.

Quite, he enjoys watching football and has some favourites, but he ain't a supporter.

I wonder if is it something to do with when you come to follow football?
I and I suspect most of us have been Liverpool fans since before we can remember.
We were Liverpool fans before we were ever fans of football.
Perhaps for people who come into the game later in life they lack the singularity that comes with supporting one team.
Still fucked up.
Like having a half and half scarf.

Or being asexual.

Bex second cousin (twice removed or some shite) says she asexual. She was on a documentary about it last year.

I've spoken to her about it & I really don't get it.

I can no more imagine never wanting to fuck than I can never wanting to eat.

I understand a person having a small amount of respect / keeping an eye out for their results of another side in another country or division than their main club.

Anything more than that, to me, is just a bit weird, and a sign you don't care enough about your chosen club.

I think its simply down to interest.

I can feel like this about other sports and have met dozens of Aussies who superb numerous teams in England.

I even know a few Utd fans who don't mind seeing us win and wanted us to win the league last year.

I guess I'm lucky Liverpool never got Galway Utd in the Milk Cup!

Some people just don't have enough little grey cells to be able to compute the drivel coming out of their mouths. It is so frustrating trying to have a logical discussion with their ilk, in fact it's better not to. I'm sure avoiding them will increase your lifespan, and definitely their's.

Is someone really suggesting that another person has a different viewpoint than our own bias?

That's terrible, shouldn't be allowed etc

They dont really support them then, they are just fans of the club, if that makes sense. I think that situation occurs more often than not outside of the UK because the tribalism of British football is a lot less prominent, however its very rare to see someone who's not attached to a single club in the UK, and I think thats just because of the intensity that comes with being a football supporter here.
