Babel is an obvious choice for an exit. He is young and has physical attributes, other members of our squad are going to be hard to shift as they are aging and slow as fuck and are on ridiculously high wages
[/quote]

Babel has refused to leave before.

I cant see why you think he'll not refuse now.

lets call it blind hope that Babel has got the hint..

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

Poor the Ross, one of the very last Hicks and Gilette apologists, until sheer weight of opinion and evidence forced an embarrassing climbdown

Jules - "wetback" ?

Really ?

Come on man !

Oh, for pity's sake. It isn't even a term of abuse in America, let alone here.

Ok, Jules.

Ok.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

Suarez and Torres up front? Yes please... He's exactly the foil that Fernando needs.

Wetback is a derogatory term for a Mexican in the US South ...

My experience is admittedly limited to the East Coast states and cities, but I've heard it used a few times there without any abusive connotation. I've done a search too now and Urban Dictionary just calls it "slang".

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

I have family in Texas and many friends from the area, and Cali ... They say it's offensive like saying k*ke etc ...

slang = gringo!

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

How would anyone find it offensive? You aren't an illegal immigrant I doubt you'd even care/understand the connotation of it.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

We're never gonna sign him

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

If we don't sign some players in his price range then we are no longer a champions league team. City's squad is so so far ahead of ours.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

Erm we're not a CL team, not by a long shot for a few years now I'd imagine

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

torres and gerrard should leave then.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

Torres probably will soon enough

Am I missing something? Wetback?

Ahh, TBF I've heard it shitloads of times in US shows & never once thought it to be racist. That said according to some stupid course I did in work almost every single word on earth is offensive in some way to someone. I was told you couldnt call someone mate, & that saying, luv or hun was sexist & could lead to sexual harassment charges!

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

just clear things up friends, in case there is any lingering doubt, wetback is a racial slur on par with nigger, kike, gook, slant eye, etc. Best avoid it unless you want to come off as a good ole boy from the South.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

In the South that might well be true. In the North-East it isn't.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

I encourage you to use wetback as much as you like all over the US and see if you don't get the "deer in the headlights" treatment from the people who hear you. If you don't, they don't know what it means, but trust me, it is a racial slur. It's not like you cross the Mason-Dixon line and everyone just uses wetback like it's tantamount to Mexican.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

I've never heard of the term kike before this thread.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

Alls I know is, whenever Suarez has played well for about 12 months I've had all sorts of Mancs going on about how great he is, because they thought he was going there. 35m Euros was mentioned, the highest ever to the Dutch league - and so it was with bitter cringing horror that I watched him have a decent world cup. I wished injury and pain on him to no avail.

If we get him I'll be effing chuffed.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

This thread is now all about the etymology of the word wetback (I had no idea that such a word/slang existed before today).

You take your discussion on Suarez and your manc mates to another thread please.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

There's seems to be an awful lot of racist words I never knew existed.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

I seem to know most of them.

I think reading James Ellroy novels has probably helped.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door

What's the racist term for the English?

Limey's not particularly offensive, and I believe the french call us roast beef, which is, frankly, laughably shit.
