Botafogo has announced on its official website that it has signed Ajax midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old Uruguayan, who is part of his country's Olympic squad, has signed a four-year contract with the Rio de Janeiro-based club.

Lodeiro joined Ajax in January 2010 after impressing at Nacional but failed to make his mark at the Eredivisie champion, featuring just 19 times for the club.

Lodeiro, who was also part of the Uruguay's title-winning squad at the Copa America, will join up with the rest of the Fogao team after the Olympic Games, where La Celeste will tackle United Arab Emirates, Great Britain and Senegal.

URUGUAY manager Oscar Tabarez last night told Luis Suarez to ignore the English boo-boys.

The Liverpool striker was taunted every time he touched the ball in Uruguay’s 2-1 win against the UAE at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The crowd’s reaction followed Suarez’s racism row with Manchester United’s Patrice Evra last season.

But Tabarez admitted: “We were expecting this but we can’t demand anything from the fans.

“We all just have to get on with the game.”

Meanwhile, Tabarez admitted he was in the dark about Liverpool’s reported interest in midfielder Gaston Ramirez.

He said: “I will ask him if it is true and if it is, I will congratulate him.”
