Being mentioned in another thread but anyways:

Everton fear they will lose midfielder Steven Pienaar on a free transfer next summer after contract talks with the South African international hit an impasse.

Pinaar, 28, has refused to sign an improved deal - reported to be worth around £65,000 per week - and is free to enter into a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

The former Ajax player joined Everton from Borussia Dortmund in a bargain £2 million deal in 2007 and has been a huge hit at Goodison Park.

Everton captain Phil Neville is desperate for Pinaar to stay but has revealed that the club have exhausted every avenue in their efforts to keep the midfielder.

"It would be a massive blow to lose him," Neville said. "He's such an influential character. But it happened to Joleon Lescott and we did not want him to move.

"You can say to Steven every minute of the day that we don't want him to leave. But at the end of the day, it's his decision. He's from South Africa, he's played for Ajax, then Dortmund. Now he's been to Everton and had the happiest days of his career, I think.

"The club wants him to stay, but there's not much else we can say. He's probably weighing up his options now and you just hope for our sake that he signs."

I think this would be a brilliant pick up ... Good on the ball, tough kid and hitting the prime of his career.

I don't really get Phil Neville's explanation though, 'He's from South Africa.' And?

Too old. Too much money. Doesnt fit the profile NESV want

NESV work towards getting good value for money.

Age is a factor, but it's not the be all and end all.

Yes age is indeed a factor but at 29 next birthday and having turned down 65£k (apparently), I would have thought he wouldnt be seen as value for money

That's the problem about Bosman's tho.

Free transfers arent free if they're shit.

I still hold some hope for Mr Cole.

And rightly so. He's not ideal but he's still a very good footballer.

He put in a great ball for our second goal, and quite a few more dangerous balls before, which Torres didn't read or react to.

Same here. It's a difficult time for anyone, let alone a touch player like Joe Cole, to be joining us. Performances aside, I'm actually impressed with the commitment he's shown on the pitch, and that's not something that's always been said about him in the past. He'll be all right IMO.

Yeah - the other day there was a chalkboard posted of how deep he was dropping, isolating Torres and not being effective, which is one way of reading it.

Another is that he's dropping deep to look for the ball, to fight, make tackles and get stuck in - which I believe he has been doing, and that's all you can ask when a player and it's team are struggling for form.

When he came on as a sub in Europe he looked like he had a point to prove to himself as well as the fans, and went some way to back that up against Blackburn I thought. We'll grow to love him soon enough, I'm certain of that.

Where would we play him though and what would really be the point?

We've not had much luck with floaty AM type players deployed out wide in the past and we already have someone like Joe Cole as well as Pacheco coming through the ranks. We desperately need some proper width. So we should sign some wingers.

His hair is woeful. He will have to perform very well to avoid being labelled a shit haired useless cunt.
