I think he was honestly trying to clip him round the back of the head too but cos of the height difference & the fact he moved away ended up getting his face.

Honestly it wouldn't be the end of the world for him to get a 1-2 match ban – maybe bad for the team's form, but he does need a rest sometimes and doesn't seem like Rodgers is going to give him any out of his own will.
That being said, I would be surprised if they ban him for this. Unlike Shelvey, he didn't hit anyone, there was no question of causing bodily harm here, just an overly rash gesture.

It's quite bad that the ref must have claimed he didn't see the Shelvey incident, but there's no way in hell the linesman can claim he didn't see Sterling's one, I mean look for fuck sake.

Precisely. If the ref, and/or linesmen, sees it and decides not the react then the board cannot take action or they'll be down playing the refs position.
Yes, as Red Mullet describes above, the linesman would have to say he didn't see the incident for Sterling to get charged, and how on earth could he say that?
