Star vs star

Messi has been breaking records again over the last couple weeks, which has obviously brought out the usual praise for him and by proxy Ronaldo. Those two have been having this personal duel over the last few years driving each other to aim for greater heights in a bid to be the best.

I might be way off but it feels like despite the fact that we still have star players in football (outside of those two) we have seen the rise of the team over the star.

I remember more talk of star player match ups, for example:

Who will win the midfield battle - Gerrard vs Keane vs Vieira.

Who will score more, Henry or RVN?

What do you guys think?

Gerrard v Keane was never about stars, it was about who was the dominant player in that position. Keane was never the star of the Utd team despite his obvious value to them

I use the word star but yes, you can substitute it for dominant player.

It's because there's a lack of genuinely world class players now

When I was a lad there were seemingly loads of players who were magnificent, now there doesn't seem any where near as many.

Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, cafu, nedved, raul, Gerrard, Keane, viera, Henry, van nistlerooy etc etc all brilliant.

No doubt the top 2 now are arguably better than that lot, but surely the top 50 players were better 10 years ago than the top 50 nowadays

I just think thats down to the premiership, not many here... But yeh I would tend to agree their appears to be a decline..

All the worldy's are in Spain and Germany..

I think Suarez was a world star in the Premier League last year.

This year (and previously) the Premier League has Sergio Aguero.

Both those players could feature in any team and be standout players.

Although it pains me to say it I also think John Terry could be a defender in any team.

I'm sorry for pointing it out, but you're actually talking about closer to 20 years ago. Not 10.

I think as you age you just get more cynical about the talent of players though.

I bet mini-Fabio would love players like Cavani, Pogba, Di Maria, Sanchez, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Lewandowski, etc as part of that group.

Maybe, but none seem to have those stand out for me

Perhaps we're desensitised to talent, with so much coverage of all the leagues

It used to be a rare treat to see the world's best
