If we were playing some sort of fantasy football I'd go along with this. There aren't any noticeable deficiencies. It would be a young and hungry team with a point to prove. The only players +25 years old would be Mignolet, Bogdan, Skrtel, Milner and Toure, three of whom have won a league title elsewhere and two are young by goalkeeping standards. Obviously this lineup would need tailored to each team and formations would need to be altered but the advantage is a lot of these players are adaptable to various positions and as a basis this is what I'd like to see, with Coutinho given a licence to roam in a way that David Silva does for Man City. You could have a diamond with Coutinho or Markovic at the point. Or drop Firmino further back to make a 4-2-3-1 if we need to be defensively solid.
We need someone to push Sturridge and threaten his position, we can't build around him anymore, and even more vital is getting that hole in midfield plugged. Carvalho played like a man in a kids playground at the U21 European Championships winning the Player of the Tournament and was voted the Portuguese League's Young Player of the Year the season before in a position that usually isn't given merit when it comes to giving out these accolades. So he's no flash in the pan and we need a presence in midfield badly and he could well pose a formidable barrier and develop a relationship with his international team-mate Ilori. I still have reservations with Can. He can look promising going forward but then seems lackadaisical or physically drained when defending and in a fast-paced league you can ill-afford that, and Henderson or Milner will be difficult to displace for an advanced role (whose energy and enthusiasm, relishing the captaincy with the former and out to prove that he was right to deserve more games with the latter, will reverberate throughout the squad). I'll be honest, I'd prefer Rossiter to Can.
I was delighted with the Clyne purchase even if it was three years and £12.5m too late, we've got the guy eventually. The centre defenders will notice a remarkable difference from Johnson's half-assed jog back. I'm not a Moreno fan and sooner Flanagan is back from injury the better, but given the former is still young and willing to improve the defensive side of his game, he could prove me wrong and be an asset eventually, I don't count on it though. Our defenders are men, men who are leaders and have captained other sides - Clyne at Crystal Palace, Skrtel at Slovakia, Sakho the youngest captain in Ligue 1 history, Toure with Arsenal and Man City, Wisdom with under age England sides, and Flanagan renown for his determination and great attitude.
Teixeira has done what we wish of all the youngsters, to go out on loan and impress and warrants being Coutinho's understudy. Trying to view the positive aspects to moving on Sterling, the sale may have even galvanised this side, a few players were rumoured to have given him the cold shoulder on the first day of training, so they may feel like they got their way, and as well as that, it gives a few of our most talented youngsters in Wilson, Canos, Kent and Ojo the incentive to play the odd game. Many on here already view Ibe as a better prospect than Sterling in terms of ability and attitude aswell. I thought he was good enough last season but the loan move to Derby will have done him no harm at all, as his influence showed with their fall from the top of the table coming as he was returned to us. Firmino will be fantastic, another with a great attitude and work rate to go with his talent. I can't wait to see him in a red shirt and to be awarded the Breakthrough Player of the Year in the season before last in a league and country that prides itself on its youth is some honour. I'm also quietly optimistic about Ings and Origi. We've completed most of our transfers before the first training session and it therefore gives our coaches time to work with them and prepare them adequately before the game against Stoke. I'm really looking forward to this season.
