I just wondered what everyone's thought's were on him and his prospects for the rest of the season?

I know we need a DM, but if we don't get one, does he have a chance to stake a claim? I've always thought he was a bit meh, though I've also seen some good performances from him too.

Anyway: Gerrard, Meireles and Spearing is surely better than the alternatives.

He's tended to look quite good in the reserves and I like him as a player.

At the moment, I'm not against giving him a chance in the first team to prove he's worth keeping.

I'd definitely play him ahead of Poison and Crapsen in the DM role.

He's got heart, doesn't seem afraid to get stuck in, runs non stop and with his height meaning a definite possibility of him suffering with Short mans complex, you know you're gonna get 110% effort from him.

He played with a suspected broken toe in the derby, so that just show what kind of committment you'll get from him. It's the footballing skills that are questionable though. Kenny obviously like him.

I thought he did OK in the Derby Match. I still don't see him improving enough to be a long-term prospect though. I think he could earn a good living playing in the Championship.

I am not convinced about categorising a player specifically as a "defensive midfielder." IMHO all midfielders should have an attacking side to their game.

What do you get when you guzzle down sweets?
Eating as much as an elephant eats
What are you at getting terribly fat?
What do you think will come of that?

He is worth a shot, he looks better than fuckin Poulson thats for sure.

Anyway it would be nice seeing some players coming through, and if they are as good or better than whats there now, bring them on!

Wilson Jonjo Kelly Spearing Patcheco Suso should all be getting a run out to see if they can replace the 'established' stars, I know Kelly has already done that, but he is there to show it can be done.

He'd kick your fucking head in if you even thought that near him.

Spearing can thank Poulsen for his rehabilitation. He looks very average to me, but when your only competition for a particular slot in the team is SHITE, then average starts looking much better.

Still hope we sign a DM this month though. Or try Ming and Gerrard together in CM.

Shorty is a Championship-player. Should not be good enough for us.

He might be good enough for us next season then.

Don't be sizeist!

Anyway, lets see what he can do eh?

He has only played a handful of games and hasn't been embarrassed at all yet, unlike Poulson

Spearing isn't really a DM. For the reserves he ran the show, spraying the passes and dictating the play. He looked very good and consistently so at that level. He certainly merits a start before Poulson.

this is the role mereiles should be playing. Behind the player in the hole but in front of the defensive mid. I'd be happy to give him the europa league to prove himself

Good all rounder that is a bit inconsistent.

The problem is that whilst his consistency might improve he will always be tiny and I don't think he will ever play at the top level even if he was to improve every year from now till the day he retires.

Squad player at best or midtable team starter at best, but he will more than likely end up in the championship for the majority of his career.

Because of his size? Unbelievable

Liverpool

* Football League Cup (4): 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984
* Charity Shield (3): 1979, 1980, 1982
* European Cup (2): 1980–1981, 1983–1984

He works hard and I think the fact he is a local lad got him a starting place in the derby. I would like to see him given a go from now until the end of the season (ahead of Pulsen at least) but from what I have seen I think his ability is limited.

i liked the fact he can improve every year he plays and yet he'll never be able to play at the top level. Even though he could improve 100 times over each year.

Makelele was about as tall as Spearing.

I would hold him at bay by holding the top of his head.

I say give him a shot....I have no reason to doubt him so far and judging by Krump's video earlier, he's been putting in the extra effort in training.

I thought he kept Everton's Arteta quiet in the derby. When I've seen clips of him from reserve games he looks like he can pick a pass. I think his enthusiasm and energy are qualities we need in the midfield. He's earnt more chances.

Jesus Christ lads, if you tried hard enough you could probably make a list of players at the highest level that have no first touch, can't run the length of them self and have one leg.

Spearing is not comparable to Dalglish or Makelele.

For every Makelele, Dalglish, Messi etc. there are thousand of players that didn't make it because they weren't tall enough. Small players need to compensate by being better at other things and Spearing is just a decent all rounder and nothing more.

Like I said on the Sunday match thread, he might be limited as a footballer, but he's got desire and shows real commitment on the pitch which is what you need from a DM, he's willing to stick a foot in, and I thought he pressed brilliantly across the park on Sunday. Obviously he's no Mascherano, but he is, without doubt, the best DM we've got right now. Poulsen is awful, and Lucas can't tackle and isn't willing to go into a challenge the way Spearing is, and that's what you need from that position. I'd play him first choice until/unless we get someone else in.

Him as part of a deeper midfield two for a 4231 or even one of the three in a 433.

I agree.

But when someone like Spearing is your best DM, you know how badly you need a new DM.

Spearing 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m)
-----------------------------------
David Batty is 5 ft 8 (1.72 m)
Nobby Stiles 5 ft 6 in(1.68 m)
Sammy Lee 5 ft 2 in (1.57 m) fuck me, I know that he's short but that's fucking short.
Brian Flynn 5ft 3 in (1.60 m)
Dennis Wise 5ft 6 in(1.68 m)
Shaun Wright-Phillips 5ft 6 in (1.68 m)

Jay is a limited player but I like his energy and he gives 100%. I'd be inclined to give him a chance because he plays for the shirt!
