Spearing with an unbelievable performance

should have played more often fro 5 or 10 minutes previously to today. whilst it doesn't excuse his performance today i didn't see lucas step up to the experienced central midfielder.

he can't get any worse after today. must have been harder for him with noone knowing what formation we were playing

It's a surprising game for Rafa to throw him in. Devoid of an experienced midfield partner and starting in a much weakened starting XI for an away game against a team that did well in its last match.

When he doesn't give them a chance, he never. When he does, it seems like its never right. :-[

An average player. Don't know why people keep labeling him as "new Gerrard"....

What people?

He's nowhere near the class of Gerrard. He's Rafa's vain attempt at keeping the fans onside by giving a local lad and a product of the academy a chance.

He is a tidy footballer but definitely isnt good enough for us.

Funny, I've never, ever heard anybody say anything of the sort.

Who have you heard say it?

Jimmy Case was quite protective of him after the match. He said Lucas was mainly to blame because he was undisciplined in his position and basically abandoned Spearing far too often.

Some people on here have grossly overrated him; he's a Championship footballer.

laughable, Spearing gave it away about 4 times with two of those leading to sustained pressure on our defence. can't do that in the premiership, in central midfield.

Makes you wonder why players like Hammill and Anderson couldn't get a chance (not even a cameo sub appearance) in the past. Could they have been any worst?

I didn't see the match, just reporting what Case said.

He managed to play a worse game than Lucas in midfield, an achievement that should not go ignored.

And btw mate, your comparison of an EPL newbie to a fairly more experienced player capped internationally isn't exactly fair though.

Hammill scored today
[/quote]

And he's already scored 2 before that in less than 10 games? For someone who has only got games from on off short stint loans, he's progressing very well. Shame about not having a chance here though.

bullshit, lucas was better than him simple as. if spearing were foregin rather than a scouser would case have leapt to his defense? I doubt it.

Spearing was easily the worst player on the field yesterday.

I never want to see him in a red shirt ever again.

Every player gets a roasting when they first break in.

I remember Gerrard getting owned by Ginola in one of his first games.

Jesus give the lad a chance. His support was Lucas.

It's his first league start for gods sake.

What an awesome manager you'd make eh?

i really like spearing.

i havent seen the game as yet and with everything ive read i doubt i will ever watch it.

the fact that the guy has been given VERY VERY little playing time and then thrown in at the deep end im not suprised he played like shite. the only one to blame for this unfortunate event is Rafa. Spearing is a talented player but he simply cannot expect people to fill in at short notice with MINIMAL experience.

i remember us having a lot of deadwood when rafa first came along and he spoke at length about squad depth.. At the moment we have Voronin and N'Gog to fill in when one of the best strikers in the world is injured.. Thats a pretty pathetic.

I am really starting to lose faith

Coming down on Spearing is harsh in the extreme. Give youth a chance eh? Spearing was put under pressure because he was in a team that wasn't performing very well all over the park. Yes he made mistakes, but I've seen Gerrard give the ball away in dangerous positions, I've even seen him pass the ball to Henry and gift a goal away now and again. I think Spearing has the attributes to make an excellent player, given a bit of support.

It was the worst performance from a Liverpool midfielder that I've seen in the last 10 years.

Way worse than Plessis, Lucas, Sissoko or Diao at their worst.

If it was a foreign lad putting in that performance half of your lot would jump on his back and get his ankles. But I guess you're right though, the only way is up, cos I don't think it's possible for anyone to perform worse.

He did look out of his depth. Obviously the circumstances were not ideal, but in a way all league debuts for young players involve them being 'thrown in the deep end'. Some sink, some swim. It's not career-defining, but that performance is bound to have some effect on Spearing's confidence. How he comes back from this will be the test of his character.

As for his talent... I've never been that convinced tbh, but it's obviously too early to write him off completely.

It was a very tough task for Spearing to come in and take on the Masher role, for which he is apparently being groomed, against a decent midfield. Unsurprisingly, his performance fell well short of what is required which probaly indicates that he is not really ready for first team football yet, even if he does eventually make it.
What it does tell us is, like him or lothe him, Lucas is right now our second best CM or third if you include Gerrard in the ranking.
He will hopefully fall down the ranking when Aqualini comes available for selection but right now I think the Lucas haters should pipe down with their calls for him to be dropped in favour of Spearing, Plessis or whoever else takes their fancy.

its all in the mind. like when you get a brand new car or a mobile and you do stupid things to take care of it and preserve it. then you never really get the most out of it. thats like lucas i don't think he'll ever get the most out of his limited ability he's too careful and timid.

sometimes you need to just put a disgusting dent in it, really fuck it up early on. so that you stop caring about it and then you relax a bit and use it the ways its meant to be used.

So really you think Lucas Leiva should issue a statement saying he doesn't give two fucks what the fans think and he's going to do what he pleases?

I'm not sure if it'll work! But I don't see the harm in trying. I agree he's much too cautious in possession.

Those of you defending Spearing's performance yesterday need to go back and re watch the match. Bash Lucas as much as you like but he has never put in a performance even half as bad as Jay did yesterday.

Part of the blame goes on Rafa for putting Spearing in a nearly impossible situation to succeed but there is nothing about his play yesterday that deserves defending.

He simply isn't good enough and doesn't have the size to be competitive at this level.

I think you've made a mistake. People aren't really defending Spearing per se, they're just slating your bollocks thread.
