Spanish Teams

Rafael Benitez and Vicente del Bosque and maybe Unai Emery.
Thought Del Bosque had retired, my bad, so that's three, maybe four. As for Rafa, behave Arn, one of the top ten managers in the world doesn't manage relegation threatened Newcastle ffs.

This is all very arbitrary anyway, there are some very good Spanish managers no doubt, but claiming at least five of the worlds top 10 are Spanish is laughable hyperbole.

Liverpool have been doing that for fucking YEARS.

I think the problem is that we haven't been doing it for years. We have, however, signed any and all of the dozens of players who played a fucking blinder against us and then never displayed that quality again.

So name your top ten managers in the world.

I would include Klopp, Mourinho, Ancelotti, Simeone and Conte to the five I already mentioned. I would not include Löw because I don't have a clue how good club manager he is.

This is a bit of a silly argument. It's cyclical.

There was a 5 year period (or so) in which English teams were very dominant in the Champions League. Now Bayern and a few of the Spanish teams are very strong.

We can see domestically that over the last years the (traditional) top teams in England have weakened dramatically but that's not going to stay that way indefinitely, is it? Certainly not with the amounts of money knocking about.

As for the Europa League, I think teams on the continent take it far more seriously. The English clubs that can genuinely compete are more interested in trying to finish in the top four and see it a little beneath them. Also, from a playing style I think the non-English teams are better suited when compared to the lesser sides in the Premiership... though this is changing and quickly.

There's a clear divide between those five and Pep, Del Bosque, Enrique (although I'm not 100% convinced) and the rest, but the following are just as good as if not better than Emery and definitely Rafa;

Allegri, Blanc, Hiddink, Low, De Boer and Pellegrini heck you could even argue that Mancini, Wenger and Van Gaal are.

There are dominant teams in both of these leagues, I'll give you that.

But what I meant was that the average strength of these leagues is way better than in England, like it or not.
That is not true - i heard on radio today that Gareth Bale said that unlike english league you dont have to be at your best in Spain for each game plus the winter break gives you a bonus later in the season. The other leagues are as competitive as Scotland. Ita much tougher here but when english teams are at their best none of those in europe stand a chance.

If it was on radio - who am I to argue.

Actually it was a bbc reporter quoting some stuff that Bale had told him regarding life in Spain. The conversation went further to add about the willingness of top players wanting to come here ir even move away from here to preserve their careers.

You should try the telly for a change and actually watch some German or Spanish footy.

I watch a lot of la liga and have to ask myself WHY? Many of the the games are an absolute crap borefest and to think the likes of Real Sociedad or Getafe would even last five minutes in the championship let alone the PL is misguided. All the talent and excitement is in the top 6 or 7 teams.
At least in the PL any team could beat anyone, look no further than Leicester, tipped for relegation.

As far as the challenge for the EL do you really think that if Spurs took it seriously they wouldn't have had a very good chance of winning it? They have a much much better squad than Seville.

The fitness and fatigue levels of la liga teams are a huge advantage for them against pl teams that compete in a fair bit more competitive leave...

It's a good point about the winter break, Klopp himself has said it gives the rest of Europe an advantage. We flog our players into the ground and then get turned over in the later stages of competitions.

We have had to sacrifice league positions for the Europa and have still lost key players through injury.

Bale doesn't need to carry Real but he had to carry that Spurs team at times. So, of course, it's easier for him now.

I do and i dont think many of those teams would last an entire season in this league. Look no further than some of the spanish players we and others have bought. There is a high level of inconsistency to their performances.

The Spanish players we have had is like a wet dream - Reina, Alonso, Torres, Garcia. Granted we had lots of Spanish duds as well but surely it has got nothing to do with nationality but more to do with ability.

So dominant in Europe...

At the time of writing we could have 2 All Spanish finals... and imho probably will end up that way..

I cant see City getting the better of Madrid in their own back yard.. Sevillia are at home with 2 away goals.. then there is Villareal.. taking a 1-0 lead to Anfield.. I can see them scoring an away goal which will make Liverpool's job much harder...

So I predict 2 Spanish finals..

They have dominated the trophy haul in Europe in recent times..

Why is this, with supposedly the Biggest and Best League in the world at our disposal ?

Is it because of the competitive nature of our Domestic League, killing off our clubs European ambitions ?

Is this because of the dominance of their national side over the last decade ?

Do you think if our National side was more successful our clubs would be more successful in Europe?
It feels good to be wrong

I particular like 1 quote on twitter.

'Imagine if the 8th placed team in La Liga battered the 4th placed team in the Premier League. Imagine how the La Liga fans would slate the Premier League.'

I think there is a difference between facing us in Europe compared to facing other english clubs. It makes the opposition wary and to be honest we also change in European nights to the point where you kind of question if the players and fans alike really want to win a PL title ?

I don't see the connection, Ahmed. The fact that we particularly come alive on European nights never got in the way when we were winning league titles.
