Philippe Coutinho is feeling ‘much better’ and is hopeful of being fit to face Southampton on Sunday following the thigh injury sustained at Watford.

The forward was forced from the field after just 13 minutes of the Reds’ 1-0 win at Vicarage Road on Monday evening after a heavy challenge left him with a dead leg.
However, Coutinho is optimistic at being deemed fully fit and ready for action when the Saints visit Anfield this weekend.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: “The injury is much better. It was a hard tackle and what happened was a dead leg. It caused a lot of pain in the area I was hit, but the pain has reduced now.
“At the moment, I am feeling very well – the first couple of days were the most painful.”
Despite being required to leave the action so early against Watford, Coutinho was ultimately pleased his teammates were able to secure a 1-0 victory and maintain Liverpool’s push for a top-four finish.
He added: “Of course, when you have to come out of such an important game like this one, and when you leave that early, it frustrates you, but thanks to God it was nothing major – just a strong tackle.
“It was nothing too serious and the main thing was we won the game and we left the match very pleased and happy because the result was very good for us. The main thing was for us to come home with the three points.”
The result leaves Liverpool in third place in the Premier League table and with just three matches remaining, Jürgen Klopp’s side know securing qualification for the Champions League rests firmly within their own hands.
“These three points are very important for us – they kept us fighting for the top four and left our aim in our own hands,” Coutinho continued. “We have a target to keep ourselves up there and we have to fight for that because everything is in our hands.
“These three points were very important, but now we have three games left and we have to win them, although we understand that will be a very difficult task. As I’ve said before, every game in the Premier League is very difficult, but if we want to achieve our aims, we have to go through tough games and win them. If we win them, then we will be there in the Champions League next year.”
Liverpool’s match-winner on Monday came via a sumptuous Emre Can goal, with the German finding the back of the net with a stunning overhead kick in first-half stoppage-time.
As a man with a penchant for the spectacular himself, Coutinho is well placed to judge when he declared it the strike of the season so far.
He smiled: “It was a great goal! In my opinion, it was the most beautiful goal of the season. It was also a very important goal for our team and we needed it in the game because we needed to win.
“That goal gave us what we needed. I am very happy for the team to achieve the win and, of course, Emre Can is a very hard-working player who deserves all the accolades for scoring such a goal.”

Very important game, obviously. A win is a must if we want to have the chance to finish 3rd.

Southampton are decent footballing side but seem to be a bit on a downward going spiral.
Played some pretty good football against Chelsea but ended up losing 2-4 and drew 0-0 with Hull at home last weekend.
Will be a tough game no doubt. They have some quick attacking players that will cause us some problems.
Gabbiadini has only managed 1 shot on target in his last 270 mins of football, or something. That will obviously change on Sunday.

I'd go:

Ming
Clyne Matip Lovren Milner

Lallana Can Gini

Firmino Origi Coutinho

There were rumours on twitter yesterday that all is not well in their camp and that a number of players were having disagreements with the manager.

If VVD wants to come to us, but only if we're in the CL, hopefully he's playing on Sunday 😉

I'd like to see Ojo play wing and Firmino centre. From his absence from the bench he is obviously not in Klopp's thoughts. So I'll go with that team too.

I've been more impressed by Trent when he played RB, overlapped, and attacked from wide right than Ojo out wide. Like Ibe, Ojo has shown in his limited minutes that he has a tendency to slow the ball down unnecessarily when he could just attack his defender head on with his pace and hold him off with his upper body strength. Instead, he slows it down, rolls the ball around, tries a little burst, and then goes to ground. That part of his game has to improve - I can't trust him in a crucial game like this.

Somehow it seem like Gini has very little juice left in his legs. Lucas seems fresher and is playing with confidence so a tight call there. Also I hope Studge is for enough to start, or I would consider Firmino up central and solve right side different.

Origi has played wide left a lot, especially in France, and I really don't like seeing Firmino wide right where he is slightly detached from his partnership with Coutinho, they both play better when given the chance to interact more.

Milner is looking knackered. However there is no chance of introducing Moreno or moving Clyne over and playing AA at RB so I guess he's just going to have to see the season through.

.................................Ming

Clyne ........... Matip ........ Lovren .......... Milner

.................. Can ................ Wijnaldum

............................. Coutinho

.. Lallana .............. Firmino ............Origi

Sturridge to come on after 60 mins.

I would go with this team, but TAA instead of Milner and possibly also Sturridge for Origi (if he's fit enough to start). The team badly needs some fresh energy and ideas; it's gone too stale and predictable lately and Milner is frankly one of the biggest culprits. I also want to see Grujic for more than 5 minutes.

That's when sturridge should come on, but I think we all know he'll get the regulation 10 mins at the end.

He may be a decent one for the future, but on Sunday with what's at stake, bearing in mind he's barely played all season and has very little game time with the first team all season, I don't want to see him on the pitch unless absolutely necessary.

I dont know why everyone is dropping Lucas for this game given how well hes played 4 of the last 5 games.

Origi is the one I would drop or Wijnaldum who looks fucked.

Id probably play
Mignolet
Clyne
Lovren
Matip
Milner

Lucas
Wijnaldum
Can

Lallana
Firmino
Coutinho

With Sturridge coming on for Wijnaldum if shit goes south.

Pretty sure Klopp will play exactly the same team as Watford though with Lallana on the bench again.

In our last 5 games, Lucas started 2 home games, during which we shipped 4 goals (2 each against Bournemouth and Palace). Then he started 2 away games, and we conceded 1 goal (West Brom, Watford).

See a trend there? 😀 I can see why Klopp might drop Lucas from the starting lineup for this game, then bring him back for the next one, but it's not the obvious one about home vs away games. Ha... gotcha'!

I think it's the midfield matchups that determines if Lucas plays:

vs Bournemouth -- King, Arter and Wilshere
vs Palace -- Puncheon, Cabaye and Milvojevic
vs West Brom -- Yacob, Livermore and Fletcher
vs Watford -- Cleverley, Capoue and Docoure

I admit to not having the faintest idea about Docoure and Milvojevic, but the Bournemouth and Palace midfields had better pace and movement / mobility versus the ones we encountered against West Brom and Watford. We'll be coming up against a Southampton midfield of Romeu, Davis and one other (Clasie / Ward-Prowse / Hojbjerg). This was their setup in 3 games against us this season that locked us out for 270 minutes, and is a more mobile midfield.

With Lallana playing about 75 minutes against Watford, Klopp will feel he's ready to start, and especially as we need his off-the-ball work. As for Gini, I'm not too worried - he's looked leggy late in games, but there's no reason he can't do about 65 minutes at a good level before coming off, if needed.

We may have to try something different against this lot as Puel surely knows how to stop us. I'm not sure what that's going to be. Maybe surprise them by going two up with Sturridge/Origi - Firmino and then have Coutinho, Wijnaldum and Lallana behind them, with Can holding.

I don't think Lucas deserves to be dropped but I'd do it anyway to bring Lallana back into the side in midfield. I agree with Rurik about Trent coming in for Milner, and playing Sturridge. Origi shouldn't start, he's been pretty ineffective for a while now.

-------------Mignolet-------------
Clyne--Matip--Lovren--Milner
---------------Can-----------------
--------Lallana--Gini------------
Origi------Firmino-----Coutinho

Although I could see Origi dropped for Lallana, and Lucas in the middle three. I think it is essential we have Lallana in the middle 3 however, to get some creativity in the middle.

Defo 0-0. The nil-nilliest of results imaginable. Id start Sturridge over Origi for sure though

I'd love it if we freshened it up, however we all know by now that Klopp doesn't do freshening up, he must stink. Only kidding. I see pretty much same XI that started vs Watford

-------------Ming----------------
Clyne--Matip--Lovren--Milner
--------------Lucas---------------
--------Can------Gini--------------
-Firmino---Origi------Coutinho

If it was me however I'd probably switch Gini out for Lallana, flip Clyne to LB and put Trent AA in RB. Lucas deserves to keep his place in the team on current form *shudders*.

Is Lucas really needed against Southampton?
They will attack us with pace also I think they'll focus their attacks on the wings so I don't see how Lucas is going to be useful considering his limited pace. I have a feeling that it's going to be like the Crystal Palace game.

No he's not needed. But Klopps won't drop him. He's a DM so may protect the back 4 if we want to push the full backs on.

I'd be dropping Origi as he's bollocks, but the rest of the team picks itself currently apart from that.

I see your point. But on the other side he seem to have lots of positive energy and that is valuable this stage of the season.

Yeah I think I'd like to see Sturridge start as well. But I have a feeling its going to be Firmino upfront, Lallana and Coutinho in the wings. And the usual midfield, back line and keeper.

Lucas is currently offering a lot more than Wijnaldum, which isn't hard. I'd drop Wijnaldum for Lallana and start a Sturridge over Origi.

Maybe I'm being a cunt here, but I can honestly say I have never had pain from a dead leg for "a couple of days". Ever. Maybe an hour later it still hurts, but a couple of fucking days?!

Is there a whole other level of dead leg that exists that I'm lucky to never have experienced?
