Post Match Southampton (H) - 3-1 Sat March 8th

I think the thing that saved Nunez was that, being Darwin, his kick mostly missed its target.

I think we’ve seen reds given for less, and while I agree it was a yellow, I can also see how some refs might have given a red.

I think that when you look at it again he barely connects, no excessive force and no studs. It’s wreckless, off the ball and a blatant yellow. But I don’t think anyone gives a red there.

Again, I agree, but it’s not as if we’ve never seen soft, debatable sending offs before.

Like I said, thankfully he mostly missed - but it was unnecessary and beyond stupid, even for him.

Had the ref sent him off VAR wouldn’t disagree.

Almost identical to Robbo's red card at Spurs last season, no..?

I get why people think it should be a red. If you're not going for the ball at all it's basically just violent conduct. Was he going for it? You could argue it, but it looked more like a petulant swipe to me, more than anything else.

Watch the position of his right foot. He's going for the ball and I think he gets a touch on it too. That doesn't stop it being a foul and earning a yellow card, but giving a red would have been as ridiculous as some of the other decisions we've had to deal with this season.

I think he's going for it in the most cursory way imaginable. Yeah technically it's possible to win it, but for me it's obvious that's not WHY he made the challenge like that. He just boiled over and wanted to kick him. There's probably enough doubt that it shouldn't be a red, but I think it's right on the edge. And I think he's lucky cos the stupid twat probably still would've done it even if the ball had already gone.

Never a red.
He's lucky he didn't connect, but there was malice behind it.

I honestly can't wait for him to get his plaque or framed picture and fuck off to Saudi or whoever wants him.

I've seen worse cynical tackles stopping counter attacks and it seems a given that these are an automatic yellow, more often than not there's no attempt to play the ball at all but its never deemed to be dangerous play.

Yeah it's a funny one. I'm not sure what the crucial criteria actually are. Obviously it's not just attempt to play the ball, cos then simple trips could be reds. To me kicking through someone's legs is basically the same as any other violent conduct, which doesn't have to be dangerous to merit a red. But I'm not sure what the rules actually say on it. It was more than just a trip - he's swung for the ball with almost no chance of getting it.

Like I said, there's enough doubt that you probably have to give him the benefit. Personally, though, I'm damn sure he'd just decided to kick through him whatever, and if he got the ball it was a bonus.

The discussion is could he have gotten red and I think the answer is yes.

Whether he should have or not doesn’t matter and VAR have rarely overturned ref when he’s that close to the action, if he had given red.

It was stupid of Nunez.

The discussion is both "could" AND "should". Squiggs had it right in the post just before yours.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that he “should” have gotten a red card and the argument that it would have been a poor or wrong decision is a bit of a red herring.

The problem is it was an unnecessary and brainless act of pure petulance that could have cost us dearly because it posed a question for VAR & the ref to answer.

Thankfully the Ref made the right call and there wasn’t enough in it for VAR to overrule.

It’s not as if we’ve not seen refs & VAR make bad decisions before.

No-one here is saying it should have been a red but there are posts in this very thread raising the question, one of them from you yourself, in addition to plenty of discussion in the media.

As for the question of petulance: it could have been, but it could equally well have been some momentary panic with no particular intent. I doubt Nunez himself knows what goes on inside his own head half the time, so I wouldn't want to try and read his thoughts from outside. The fundamental question is whether such enduring immaturity is acceptable from a Liverpool player, and there I suspect most of us are in agreement that we need better.

I thought the first half was quite flat!, however, the three changes at half have injected much needed energy and positive tactics to win the game, and put 3 points in the bag, that was the main objective. Good luck for Tuesday game

It’s ok guys, i didn’t watch the first leg as i ended up at the theatre (watching a show called Blood Brothers which had “EVERTON” graffiti on the set for most of it!) so i take some blame.

I’ll be watching this one from center parcs and old faithful 96 home shirt has made the travelling squad.

The beautiful 95/96 or the awful 96/97 home shirt?
