Hiker inspired by ‘127 Hours’ suffers similar fate
It was a case of life imitating art imitating life.
A man inspired by the hit movie ‘127 Hours’ had to be rescued from the same canyon shown in the movie.
Hapless Amos Wayne Richards, 64, hiked through the desert after watching the Oscar-nominated film about real-life climber Aron Ralston, who was forced to cut off his arm when it was trapped by a boulder.
Richards decided to make the same trip to Little Blue John Canyon in Utah – without telling his friends or family. He also seriously injured himself.
The man fell three metres down the canyon, breaking his leg and dislocating his shoulder. He did not have to hack off his arm, however.
"It took me about three or four minutes to work my shoulder and get it back in place, and once I got it back in place, I stood up and realised my ankle hurt a little bit," he told Charlotte TV station WBTV.
Like Ralston in the film, he had no way of contacting the outside world. His phone had no reception so he had to try and return to his car unaided.
With only two protein bars to eat and drinking rain water, he crawled across rocky terrain for four days before he was found by park rangers.
They began to search for him by helicopter after discovering his unattended campsite. Richards attracted their attention with by using the flash on his camera.
He is now recovering at home after being treated for his injuries and dehydration.
